Good Posture

Lilian is a budding artist living in Brooklyn after her father abruptly moves to Paris with his girlfriend. The separation leaves her feeling unsettled and hungry for connection, motivating her next choices.

After her boyfriend Nate dumps her for being immature and unmotivated, Lilian reevaluates her life. She moves in with her family friends, Don and Julia, to regroup.

A heated quarrel with Julia leads Don to disappear, leaving the house in tense silence. Julia withdraws to her room, isolating herself and reshaping Lilian’s living situation.

Julia secludes herself in her room and begins communicating with Lilian through messages written in Lilian's private journal. The exchanges reveal Julia's hold over Lilian's narrative and push Lilian toward a dangerous line of inspiration.

Lilian runs into Nate and Laura, a filmmaker, and claims she is making a documentary about Julia to impress her. Using her father's connections, she begins scouting cameramen and interviewing famous writers about Julia.

While interviewing writers, including Jonathan Ames, Lilian learns that her father is back in New York City but has not contacted her. She also discovers that Julia has used her as inspiration before, dating back to her childhood.

Julia accidentally discovers that Lilian is making a documentary when Lilian is late to meet her cameraman, Sol, who eagerly shares details. Julia confronts Lilian and cuts off all communication.

Feeling isolated and rejected, Lilian attempts to pursue Julia’s dog walker, George, but he rebuffs her advances. The rejection deepens her sense of isolation within Julia’s world.

Lilian finally speaks to her father in New York, but he does not reveal that he is engaged or expecting a child. This withholding echoes the broader family secrets still unresolved.

To repair the rift, Lilian writes an apology to Julia and finally reads her most famous work, Good Posture. She secures a job and undertakes leaving Julia’s home, while Julia grants a tentative forgiveness by allowing her into her room.

The next morning, Lilian leaves the house and sees Julia outside walking her dog. Julia and Don head toward the subway together, while Lilian walks away in the opposite direction.
