Airman First Class Adrian Cronauer arrives in Saigon to work as a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service, stepping into a loud, chaotic war zone. He begins navigating a clash of humor and military rules with regimental colleagues.

Cronauer launches his show with the iconic 'Good morning, Vietnam!' greeting. He blends censored news with irreverent humor and a steady stream of rock and roll, shaking up the rigid rhythm of military radio.

His unorthodox approach invites pushback from some officers, notably Hauk and Dickerson. The censorship and discipline of the station clash with his freewheeling format.

Despite the friction, Cronauer earns a devoted following among listeners and the respect of Brigadier General Taylor. A growing crew of fellow DJs begins to embrace his voice.

Cronauer bribes a teacher to let him join Trinh’s English class, breaking through cultural barriers. He starts sharing American slang and humor with the students.

The classes become a bridge to broader worlds, even as cultural gaps between Americans and Vietnamese loom large. Cronauer’s stories and slang widen the students’ horizons.

Tuan, Trinh’s older brother, introduces Cronauer to his circle and to Jimmy Wah’s, a local GI bar that acts as a social hub. The night outside the studio becomes a microcosm of Saigon’s tensions.

Two racist soldiers provoke Cronauer, triggering a chaotic brawl that underscores the volatility around the base. Dickerson rebukes him, though Cronauer’s broadcasts still draw a growing audience.

Tuan arranges a day with Cronauer and Trinh, but Jimmy Wah’s bombing kills two soldiers and jolts Cronauer’s optimism. Dickerson orders censorship, and Cronauer refuses to silence the truth, locking himself in the studio to report the incident.

Cronauer is suspended as the station grapples with the fallout. The morale flag dips while the younger DJs struggle to fill the air, prompting calls from listeners demanding his return.

General Taylor steps in, nudging Hauk toward reinstating Cronauer. The station begins to rebound as Cronauer returns to the airwaves.

Cronauer, Garlick, and Tuan are stranded in a congested street as a convoy heads to the front. Garlick convinces Cronauer to do an impromptu field broadcast, rekindling troops' appreciation for his voice.

Dickerson assigns a dangerous field interview toward An Lộc; the jeep carrying Cronauer and Garlick hits a mine, forcing them to hide as Viet Cong patrols pass. They signal a Marine helicopter to bring them back to safety.

Back at base, Dickerson discloses that Tuan is a VC operative who orchestrated the Jimmy Wah’s bombing and manipulated Cronauer’s redeployment. General Taylor informs Cronauer he will be transferred to Guam, deepening Cronauer’s sense of betrayal.

Cronauer confronts Trinh about the truth, and Tuan admits the U.S. Army’s devastating impact on his village, while also acknowledging he saved Cronauer at An Lộc. The revelation and the looming transfer frame Cronauer’s departure as the end of an era, including a final softball game and a taped farewell for his students as he boards a plane.
