Danny Cornish, a wandering curator, learns in Tel Aviv that his great‑uncle in Birobidzhan, Russia’s Jewish region, has died, leaving an art collection and a Golem statue hand. Though he doesn’t speak Russian, he travels to Moscow, St Peterburg and Siberia, dealing with clerks, taxis and bureaucracy while hunting the missing pieces and confronting myths of art.
