What Happens in Golden Salamander: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Golden Salamander (1950) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Sent by the British Museum to oversee the shipment of important artefacts to London, David Redfern, Trevor Howard, pushes along a lonely Tunisian road until a landslide blocks his path. In the pouring rain, he makes his way to a small town and, just before arriving, witnesses a gun-running operation. In the town’s café he meets Anna, a young Frenchwoman who had moved to North Africa with her brother Max during the wartime German occupation of France. Realising that Max, Jacques Sernas, is entangled in the criminal trade, Redfern decides to keep quiet about what he saw and focus on his job of moving the artefacts as quickly as possible.

As he spends time with Anna, Redfern falls in love and resolves to help Max escape from the criminal life and send him to Paris, where he could start anew as a painter. However, Max is killed by one of his associates on the way to Tunis.

Realising that Redfern knows too much about their operations, Serafis, Walter Rilla, the head of the outfit, and his henchman Rankl, Herbert Lom, plan to kill him and make it look like an accident. With the help of a friend, Redfern manages to escape. Tracked by his enemies during the town’s annual boar hunt, he ultimately demonstrates to the authorities that the gang murdered Max.

Q1

Why did Redfern stay silent about witnessing the gun-running operation?

Redfern chose to remain silent because he wanted to focus on completing his primary mission, overseeing the artefact shipment to London, as quickly as possible. He realised that Max, Anna's brother, was involved in the criminal operation, and getting involved would only complicate his work and put him in danger. By staying quiet, he hoped to finish his job without attracting attention from the criminal syndicate.

Foreshadowing: The gun-running operation Redfern witnesses early in the film establishes the dangerous criminal network that will later threaten his life.

Q2

Why did Redfern decide to help Max escape to Paris?

Redfern decided to help Max escape after falling in love with Anna. Moved by his feelings for her and by the tragedy of Max being trapped in a criminal life, Redfern wanted to give Max a chance to start fresh as a painter in Paris. Q6

Why did Serafis and Rankl target Redfern for murder?

Why were the artefacts important to the story?

The artefacts serve as Redfern's official reason for being in Tunisia, a mission from the British Museum to oversee their shipment to London.
