Glorious

The ending of “Glorious” is quite surreal and open to interpretation. After Wes’s harrowing ordeal in the bathroom stall with Ghat, he finally confronts the true nature of his existence and past. Throughout the film, it’s suggested that the events might not all be real—perhaps they are a manifestation of Wes’s guilt, mental state, or internal struggles. When Ghat, the cosmic entity, is about to fully manifest in Wes’s body, Wes demands one last chance to revisit his memories, specifically focusing on Brenda, the woman he loved. It is revealed that Wes is actually a murderer, having killed Brenda out of fear and inability to face intimacy, which ties into his deep-seated trauma and loneliness.

In the final moments, after Ghat extracts a part of Wes’s liver—symbolic of the organ as a vessel of his darker emotions and sins—Wes collapses in the bathroom. The blood and chaos seem to fade, leading to a supposedly normal scene where Wes lies wounded, alone, and defeated. The closing shot shows him on the ground, bleeding out, with no sign that the earlier chaos was real; the bathroom appears spotless again. This suggests that what we saw might have been a hallucination, a hallucination driven by Wes’s guilt and subconscious torment.

When Wes dies, Ghat tells him he is no hero because heroes are remembered—implying that Wes’s self-perception as a hero is a lie. Ghat’s words and the ambiguous ending point to the idea that Wes’s actions, guilt, and self-worth are intertwined, and that ultimately, his death might signify an escape from his inner demons or just the final collapse of his mind. The film leaves it up to the viewer to decide if Wes’s experience was truly real or a symbolic representation of his internal suffering, making “Glorious” a haunting meditation on guilt, trauma, and the nature of reality.
