At the state fair in Montreaux, Marie wins the chance to ask Dr. Stephen Dominick for a dance. He declines, saying it would be inappropriate for a student and a teacher to dance together. A week later, Professor Augusta Wimmer finds a discarded love letter among the pupils' belongings. Dominick and Mathe are assigned to uncover who wrote it. They conclude that Marie is the author based on handwriting. This accusation sets Marie on the path of scrutiny and punishment.
