Josie, a spirited New York showgirl, is stranded on Fiji and takes a job as a barmaid at the Bamboo Bar. There she befriends an alcoholic World War I veteran haunted by fire, helps him recover, and they fall in love. When her jealous self‑appointed boyfriend forces the veteran into a traditional fire‑walking rite, he must confront his fear and battle his rival to win Josie’s hand.
