Rosa von Praunheim explores the sexual orientation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, focusing on his experiences during his travels in Italy. Challenging the traditional image of Goethe as a romantic heartbreaker, the docudrama suggests his diverse sexual encounters, including those with men, primarily occurred during his time in Italy. These claims are supported by letters Goethe wrote to his friend Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, some of which are reenacted in the film. Historians and linguists also provide analysis, placing these letters within their historical context.
