In 1969 New York, a catastrophic incident unfolds when a gasoline tanker tips over on a highway ramp. Fuel spills into an underground electrical substation, trapping two workers inside and creating a precarious situation.

Veteran firefighter Frank Sullivan bravely defies orders and ventures underground to rescue the trapped workers. He and another firefighter work against rising fuel levels and sparking electronics, managing to escape moments before a massive explosion occurs.

After his narrow escape, Frank returns home to his wife Julia and young son Johnny on October 10, 1969. The day reinforces Frank's commitment to his family amid the dangers of his job.

Fast forward 30 years to October 10, 1999; Johnny Sullivan has grown into an NYPD detective living in his childhood home. Struggling with emotional detachment due to his father's death, his relationship with girlfriend Samantha begins to deteriorate.

The night before the 30th anniversary of Frank's death, Johnny's childhood friend Gordo visits with his son. They stumble upon Frank's old Heathkit ham radio, but their attempts to get it operational are unsuccessful.

While moderately intoxicated one night, Johnny is startled when the ham radio springs to life amidst the display of the Aurora Borealis. He engages in a perplexing conversation about the 1969 World Series, realizing he's communicating with his father from the past.

As the connection strengthens, Johnny warns Frank about a tragic error that will lead to his death on October 12, 1969. Initially skeptical, Frank soon finds that Johnny's predictions match unfolding events, convincing him to change his fate.

The timeline shifts as Johnny reveals that his future holds a struggle with lung cancer in 1989. This revelation inspires Frank to quit smoking as he begins to reflect on how their communications can alter their destinies.

As the timelines intertwine, a serial killer known as the Nightingale emerges, having taken the life of Johnny's mother Julia. With newfound memories of this loss, Johnny urges Frank to assist in capturing the killer, impacting their lives further.

Although Frank expresses reluctance, he agrees to help Johnny by gathering critical information regarding the murders. Their teamwork starts to show promise when Frank saves a potential victim, but the Nightingale retaliates against him.

Johnny meticulously uncovers a link between the Nightingale's first victim and a suspect named Darryl Simpson. Lacking sufficient evidence, however, the suspect remains free, leading to frustration for both him and Frank.

Frank discovers that his wallet holds the Nightingale's fingerprints and instructs Johnny to find it 30 years later. This piece of evidence becomes a pivotal clue for Johnny in his quest to bring the killer to justice.

In 1999, Johnny pieces together the clues and confronts an ex-detective, Jack Shepard, believed to be the Nightingale. The tension rises as the past and present collide in this decisive moment.

In 1969, Frank finds himself arrested for the murders due to the Nightingale framing him. He desperately tries to convince detective Satch DeLeon of his innocence, leveraging knowledge from his son’s warnings.

The story reaches a climax when Frank accurately predicts events in the World Series, leading to his escape and final confrontation with Shepard. This showdown represents the culmination of their joint efforts across time to change their fates.

In a heartwarming conclusion, Johnny becomes a family man, reflecting the outcomes of their struggles. The film closes with a scene of Johnny, his parents, and his own family happily celebrating together, having altered their destinies.
