Free Fall

Marc Borgmann starts a police riot-control training course, but he struggles to keep up with his peers. The intense physical demands highlight his doubts about his own abilities. He is aware of his roommate Kay Engel, who seems confident and ahead of him.

Marc and Kay clash during a training exercise, nearly coming to blows. After the confrontation, Marc apologizes for his aggression, and the two forge a cautious friendship. They begin sharing space and training routines, setting the stage for a complicated attraction.

Limpinski provokes Kay after a homophobic incident, and Kay attacks him; Marc is struck while trying to break the fight. Kay visits Marc in the hospital, and the two share a kiss witnessed by Marc's mother, sparking a family confrontation and another rift between them.

Kay attends a party at Bettina's invitation, but Marc's parents tell him to stay away from Kay because of the new family dynamics. The scene underscores the widening family fallout and the social consequences of their relationship.

Marc gives back the key to his apartment and leaves as Bettina packs to leave with their son. She confronts his lies about night shifts and demands he be out of their life by the time she returns.

Marc visits Bettina at Frank's house and finally admits his affair with Kay. The couple's once-stable life deteriorates as trust collapses and the emotional distance widens.

In the film’s closing moment, Marc is back at the academy on a jog with his peers. He pulls ahead, running alone, symbolizing his isolation and the uncertain future ahead.
