Jeffrey Franken is a power plant worker and an amateur bioelectric scientist living in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. He is about to marry his fiancée Elizabeth, and his personal life is busy with wedding plans. His scientific curiosity sits alongside his hopes for a normal future.

At Elizabeth's father's birthday party, Jeffrey gifts an automatic lawnmower as a demonstration. When Elizabeth tries to show how it works, she is pulled into the machine's path and gruesomely killed. The party atmosphere shatters as Jeffrey confronts devastating grief.

Grief propels Jeffrey to revisit his circuits and bioelectric experiments in his home workshop. He begins to host mock dinner dates with the few Elizabeth parts he salvaged and even performs self-trepanations to calm his nerves. The line between science and obsession begins to blur as he clings to the hope of bringing Elizabeth back.

Jeffrey resolves to construct a perfect new body for Elizabeth by harvesting a prostitute's body in New York City. He imagines a flawless reconstruction using the parts he intends to reassemble. The plan takes him away from his quiet town toward the perilous streets of the city.

Jeffrey encounters the pimp Zorro, a violent and controlling figure in the prostitution scene. He manipulates Zorro into letting him rent every woman for a single night to sample bodies for Elizabeth. The arrangement begins a dangerous sequence of events.

Following a news report about crack cocaine causing the deaths of prostitutes, Jeffrey creates a 'super-crack' chemical. He believes the drug will reveal the best candidate body by deadening hesitation and exposing vulnerabilities. He lures the women to a hotel room under the guise of a medical examination and marks the body parts he intends to use for Elizabeth.

That night, the women smoke the super-crack despite Jeffrey's pleas, causing them to explode into pieces. Jeffrey's plan seems to work in a horrifying way, as the crowd of prostitutes disintegrates. Zorro arrives at the room, only to be knocked out by the flying head of one of the victims.

Jeffrey collects the remaining body parts and sews Elizabeth's head onto the chosen donor body. He uses a bolt of lightning from a storm to shock the construct back to life. The revived Elizabeth moves awkwardly and can only repeat phrases spoken by the previous victims.

The Frankenhooker escapes the basement and sets out to find clients in New York. Those clients who attempt intimacy with her explode due to lingering electricity in her body. The creature begins a new, deadly quest for companionship.

Jeffrey goes looking for Elizabeth and finds her at a bar. Upon hearing her mention his name and recognizing her composite body, Zorro attacks, nearly detaching her head. Jeffrey evades the assault and takes Elizabeth home to repair her neck and attempt another revival.

Back at home, Zorro tracks Jeffrey and decapitates him in a brutal confrontation. Elizabeth watches in horror as her creator lies lifeless. The attack sets off a chain of events that deepens the tragedy surrounding their experiments.

The spare prostitute parts reanimate into grotesque monsters and overwhelm Zorro, dragging him into a storage cooler to his presumed death. Elizabeth and Jeffrey are left to confront the fallout of their gruesome experiments. The laboratory becomes a battleground of life, death, and power.

Elizabeth realizes Jeffrey's life is in the balance and uses the same revival procedure, which only works on female bodies. She places Jeffrey's head on a body constructed from the prostitutes' parts to bring him back. The reversal deepens the horror of their predicament and the moral cost of vanity.

Jeffrey awakens inside a new female body, while Elizabeth accepts the consequences of their experiments. She tells him they will be together forever, but Jeffrey is horrified by his changed form. The film ends on a grim note about obsession, life, and the price of resurrection.
