Forever

Alice is a young investigative reporter who suffers a catastrophic loss when her boyfriend, Tom commits suicide after a fight. Unable to cope with the harsh realities of life, she tracks down an isolated community run by a former psychiatrist she learned about while researching a story. She infiltrates the commune by pretending to have forgotten her identity, slipping into a sheltered world that promises safety, belonging, and a fresh start.

Inside this closed setting, Alice gradually finds a welcome and a sense of acceptance she hadn’t felt since her loss. She learns that each resident has endured tremendous pain or trauma, and that the group, while currently living in apparent joy and harmony, harbors a chilling intention beneath the surface: a planned mass suicide. The atmosphere is intimate and supportive, but the undercurrent of mortality casts a long shadow over conversations, rituals, and moments of quiet fellowship.

One resident, Charlie, discovers Alice’s hidden I.D. but chooses not to expose her deception. The two embark on a budding romance, and Alice begins to feel a depth of companionship and protection that she has been missing since the tragedy with [Tom]. As she grows more integrated, she reveals her true identity and pleads with the others to let her stay, a request they grant, cementing her sense of belonging within the group.

Yet the central dilemma—whether to stay and share in the communal life or to leave and reclaim her freedom—presses on Alice. She wrestles with the idea of ending her life, even as the commune moves toward the ritual they have long prepared. The turning point arrives when the director of the commune, [Neil], accidentally ends the life of his sick wife, a crisis that accelerates the group’s sense of urgency and makes the planned act feel imminent rather than theoretical.

Alice’s longing to escape with [Charlie] intensifies. She urges him to run away with her, seeking a new life beyond the commune’s boundaries. He initially refuses, telling her that she can go if she wants, but his stance begins to soften. In a decisive moment, he stops Alice from taking the poison and ultimately agrees that they should leave together.

The next morning, the community gathers for the ritual they have prepared. They lie down on camp beds and prepare to “let go” by setting themselves on fire after taking a poison intended to spare their suffering. The act unfolds with mournful resolve, but at the crucial moment, [Charlie] intervenes and prevents the tragedy from completing. He and Alice finally decide to run away, choosing to forge a new path together outside the commune’s hollow promises. They board a train, stepping into an uncertain future, with the final image lingering on a bench at the station where the word “forever” has been carved.
