In the late 22nd Century, the United Planet cruiser C57D embarks on a crucial mission towards Altair. Commander J.J. Adams instructs his crew to prepare for deceleration as they transition from light speed into normal space, marking the beginning of their journey.

Upon arrival at Altair, the crew of C57D learns about the Bellerophon expedition, which went missing two decades earlier. They begin to circle the planet, searching for any signs of the lost crew members.

The crew picks up a radar signal from the surface and establishes contact with Morbius, who cryptically warns them of the dangers present on the planet. Morbius, a survivor from the original expedition, suggests that he needs no help while casting doubts on the crew's safety.

Morbius provides the crew with landing coordinates, and the C57D descends into a desert area. Here, they encounter Robby, a robot exhibiting remarkable abilities that captivate the crew's attention.

During a meal at Morbius's home, he showcases Robby's loyalty and abilities, creating tension when he attempts to command Robby to attack Adams. Fortunately, Robby refuses the command, highlighting the robot’s complex programming.

Morbius reveals that he is one of the last survivors of the Bellerophon crew and shares haunting tales of the destructive entity that eliminated most of his crewmates. His stories raise questions for Adams regarding the dangers that seem to linger in the shadows.
