At the Reynolds Aviation Company, Skinny, Danny, Peewee, Algy, Scruno, and Muggs work together under Algy's father. Muggs is the only one who refuses to work, preferring to drive the gang in his jalopy. He flirts with Helen Munson, the flight nurse who is in love with Tom Lawson.

Tom's aircraft crashes on the plant airstrip, prompting Reynolds to suspect saboteurs at the facility. The accident raises the stakes for the kids as rumors of espionage begin to swirl. The incident signals the start of a larger conspiracy at the plant.

Muggs casually proclaims himself the operator of the flying ambulance and gives his friends a tour of the aircraft. Doctor Nagel, secretly the leader of a spy ring, angrily orders the group off his plane. The encounter hints at Nagel's hidden double life and the danger looming over the crew.
