Five girls mature in early twentieth‑century China, confronting a society that grants women almost no rights. As they reach adulthood, they witness brutal repression of nearby women. When Mingtao is arranged to marry a wealthy but mentally deficient man, she and her friends flee, seeking the legendary ‘garden’ where a woman's life can truly flourish.
