Vice Admiral Takajiro Ohnishi recognized that Japan’s defeat in World War II was inevitable and pursued a negotiated peace by convincing the United States that an invasion would cause massive casualties. He promoted kamikaze attacks as a deterrent, persuading Americans that the human cost would be prohibitive. However, he could not anticipate that the United States would instead end the war with the atomic bomb.
