A former junior high coach, he has spent years scribbling letters to colleges in the faint hope of turning his ambition into a career, even as his wife Jan longs for stability—home ownership and a family—over the whirlwind of David’s wanderlust for the game. The tension between chasing glory and building a life together threads through their marriage, coloring every decision David makes as he clings to the possibility that he might still coach at the highest level.

Against the odds, a surprising opportunity lands on David’s doorstep: a dubious job coaching the men’s team at Cadwallader University, a fictional Nevada college. The position pays a mere $60 for each win, but there’s a tantalizing condition—that he must lead Cadwallader to victory over Nevada State, one of the country’s top programs, to secure a lucrative long-term contract.
