The whole story of Far North (2007) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.
The film begins with a woman named Saiva, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, sharing a haunting voiceover. She reveals that a shaman once told her she was cursed from birth and that her presence would bring misfortune to anyone she cared for. As the narrative unfolds, Saiva and a young woman named Anja, played by Michelle Krusiec, find themselves camping in the icy expanse of Siberia. In a desperate attempt to break the curse, Saiva takes the drastic step of sacrificing one of her sled dogs, calming it before slitting its throat. Following this grim act, the duo decides to relocate their camp. However, their journey is fraught with peril as they narrowly evade capture by Soviet soldiers.
In a bid to escape their pursuers, Saiva leads Anja deeper into the Arctic tundra, past eerie scenes of abandoned telephone wire trees, seeking refuge in remote areas. After a long and arduous journey, they finally set up camp on a windswept beach, constructing a yurt to weather the harsh environment.
As the night falls, Saiva is haunted by memories of her past, revealing a flashback that takes her back to her time with reindeer tribes. In this poignant recollection, she recalls being shunned by her own tribe and later encountering a man who takes her in to assist with reindeer herding. This romantic alliance deepens, culminating in a gift of a wolf claw necklace, symbolizing their bond. However, the past haunts her, and the realities of her present life in the tundra alongside Anja are brutal. They struggle to hunt and survive in the unforgiving landscape.
One day, while foraging alone, Saiva stumbles upon a badly injured man, nearly frozen and on the verge of death. Initially intent on looting him, she is taken aback when he awakens and pleads for her help. This man, who later introduces himself as Loki, played by Sean Bean, is taken back to their yurt where Saiva tends to his wounds.
The next day, while on a hunting expedition, Loki expresses his gratitude and offers to help them in return for their kindness, to which Saiva responds, “We’ll see,” but Anja encourages him to procure a reindeer for them. After a successful seal hunt, Loki confides in Saiva about being an escapee from the soldiers clearing the tundra, fearing for his life. He soon reveals a portable hand-cranked radio, a symbol of hope and connection, further deepening their complex relationship.
In a turn of events, as Loki attempts to fulfill his promise by hunting a reindeer, he is captured by soldiers. However, demonstrating remarkable bravery, he manages to fight back and comes back with looted supplies, much to the relief and gratitude of Saiva and Anja. Yet, the bond between Saiva and Loki starts to fray as Anja encourages a deeper connection with him.
Flashbacks further reveal the trauma Saiva endured, including the brutal loss of her tribe and a horrifying encounter where she witnesses a loved one being murdered. The trauma culminates when she is sexually assaulted by soldiers, and in a desperate act of survival, she ensures her own escape while leaving the baby girl she finds behind, implying that this child is Anja.
As the months pass, Anja and Loki grow closer, culminating in a romantic relationship. Anja becomes pregnant, and plans are made to leave the tundra for civilization. However, this prospect fills Saiva with despair, and despite Anja's invitation to join them, she remains silent, trapped in her anguish.
One fateful night, in a fit of jealousy and desperation, Saiva tricks Anja into letting her braid her hair before she strangles her to death with it. In a chilling twist, she then skins Anja's face and disguises herself, leading Loki to mistakenly believe he is with Anja when he returns. Saiva professes her love for him, but horror strikes when he realizes the truth, causing him to flee into the unforgiving tundra, leaving Saiva to mourn her tragic actions alone in her yurt.
The film concludes with an emotional finale, as Saiva is left sobbing, encapsulating her endless torment and the cyclical nature of her cursed existence.

Far North Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered
The questions people ask most about Far North (2007): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.
Q1 Why does Saiva sacrifice one of her sled dogs in the opening?
Saiva slits the throat of one of her sled dogs because she is trying to break the shaman's curse placed on her at birth. Having been told she would bring misfortune to anyone she loved, she resorts to increasingly desperate rituals in the Arctic wilderness, and the killing of the dog is presented as a brutal attempt to appease or escape that fate before she and Anja relocate their camp.
Foreshadowing: The dog sacrifice establishes immediately that Saiva is willing to commit violent acts in pursuit of escaping her curse, foreshadowing the violence she later turns on Anja.
- saiva dog sacrifice
- sled dog killing
- far north opening
Q2 What curse did the shaman place on Saiva?
A shaman declared Saiva an evil omen at birth, prophesying that her presence would bring harm to anyone she cared for. This curse is the psychological engine of the entire film in Far North, driving her isolation, her desperate rituals, and ultimately her belief that love itself is dangerous.
Foreshadowing: The curse is stated in Saiva's opening voiceover, framing every later relationship as already doomed before it begins.
- saiva curse
- shaman prophecy
- evil omen
- saiva backstory
Q3 How did Saiva end up raising Anja?
During a flashback, Saiva is shown being sexually assaulted by Soviet soldiers who slaughtered her people. In the aftermath, she discovers an infant girl and escapes on her own, leaving the baby behind. She later returns to rescue the child and raises her as her own in the tundra, making Anja both a symbol of survival and the living proof of her trauma.
Foreshadowing: Anja's origins are hinted at through Saiva's fragmented nightmares before the full flashback reveals them.
- saiva and anja
- anja origin
- adopted daughter
- saiva flashback
Q4 What happened to Saiva's original reindeer tribe?
Saiva was shunned by her reindeer herding tribe because the shaman branded her a cursed omen at birth. Though a kind man later took her in and she fell in love, Soviet soldiers eventually attacked the tribe, slaughtering its people and leaving Saiva as one of the few survivors. The destruction of her community is the source of her deep distrust of others.
Foreshadowing: The film hints at this loss through Saiva's sudden flashbacks whenever she is at rest in the yurt.
- saiva tribe
- reindeer herders
- soviet attack
- saiva past
Q5 Why did Saiva decide to help Loki instead of looting him?
When Saiva first finds Loki half-frozen in the tundra, she initially intends only to rob him of his supplies. She changes course when he regains consciousness and begs for help, and her choice to spare and heal him reveals the conflict between the survival-hardened woman the tundra has made her and the part of her that still wants connection despite the curse.
Foreshadowing: Her hesitation at his side mirrors the moment she once chose to rescue baby Anja rather than walk away.
- saiva saves loki
- loki injured
- why help loki
Q6 Why did Loki attack the Soviet soldiers who captured him?
Loki had already revealed that he was a deserter fleeing soldiers who were clearing the tundra, so capture meant almost certain death. When soldiers grab him during the reindeer hunt, he fights back out of pure self-preservation, killing them and returning to camp with their supplies as both a survival move and proof of loyalty to Saiva and Anja.
Foreshadowing: Loki's earlier confession about being a wanted man foreshadows the inevitable violent encounter.
- loki kills soldiers
- soviet capture
- reindeer hunt
Q7 Why does Saiva murder Anja?
Saiva kills Anja out of a combination of jealousy, fear of abandonment, and the belief that her curse will destroy the people she loves. When Anja and Loki fall in love and announce plans to leave the tundra together, Saiva sees their departure as confirmation that her presence brings ruin, and she strikes first by strangling Anja with her own braid.
Foreshadowing: Anja encouraging Saiva to form a bond with Loki, and Saiva's silent refusal to join them, both signal that the relationship is reaching a breaking point.
- saiva kills anja
- why murder
- jealousy
- mother daughter
Q8 How is Saiva able to disguise herself as Anja?
After killing Anja, Saiva skins her face and wears it as a mask so that, in the dim light of the yurt, she can pass herself off as Anja when Loki returns. The disguise is what allows her to lure him into an intimate encounter and finally confess her love, making the deception the film's most disturbing image.
Foreshadowing: The film foreshadows this with Saiva's earlier obsessive braiding of Anja's hair, a ritual that escalates from tenderness to violence.
- saiva skin anja face
- disguise
- face mask
- deception
Q9 Why does Loki run naked into the Arctic tundra at the end?
Loki flees the yurt in horror the moment he realizes the woman he has just been intimate with is Saiva wearing Anja's face, not Anja herself. The shock of the betrayal, the murder, and the grotesque deception overwhelm him, and he abandons the yurt and all of his supplies in a blind panic into a landscape that will almost certainly kill him.
Foreshadowing: Loki's growing unease with the shifting dynamics in the yurt hints that he senses something is wrong before the reveal.
- loki runs away
- tundra ending
- horrific revelation
Q10 Why doesn't Saiva leave the tundra with Anja and Loki?
Anja invites Saiva to come with them when she and Loki plan to head toward civilization, but Saiva stays silent and refuses. She is paralyzed by the curse, by grief, and by the conviction that her presence will only bring them harm, and her refusal is the last warning sign before she turns on Anja in desperation.
Foreshadowing: Saiva's withdrawal whenever the topic of leaving comes up signals that she has already decided she cannot be saved.
- saiva refuses to leave
- anja and loki plans
- civilization
Q11 What does the wolf claw necklace symbolize in Saiva's flashbacks?
The wolf claw necklace is a gift from the reindeer herder who took Saiva in after her tribe cast her out, and it represents the only period in her life when she felt love, belonging, and acceptance. Its presence in the flashbacks contrasts sharply with her later isolation, emphasizing everything the curse has cost her.
Foreshadowing: The necklace appears in the flashback just before Saiva's community is destroyed, marking it as a relic of lost happiness.
- wolf claw necklace
- saiva love
- reindeer herder
- flashback
Q12 Why does Saiva keep moving deeper into the Arctic instead of seeking safety?
Saiva pushes further north because the Soviet soldiers are combing the tundra for people to clear out, and the only way to stay hidden is to outrun them into the most remote terrain possible. Each new camp takes her farther from any chance of rescue, which is what makes her final isolation so absolute.
Foreshadowing: The opening scenes establish that the soldiers are a constant, close threat, justifying each retreat.
- saiva flees soldiers
- remote tundra
- evading capture
Q13 What is the significance of Loki's hand-cranked radio?
The portable radio is the only link the three have to the outside world, and Loki uses it as a gesture of trust and connection with Saiva and Anja. It also underlines the tension between the isolation they have chosen in the tundra and the civilization that is closing in on them, foreshadowing that their refuge cannot last.
Foreshadowing: Loki's pride in the radio hints at his longing to return to society, which later drives his plan to leave with Anja.
- loki radio
- hand-cranked radio
- connection outside world
Q14 Is Saiva actually cursed, or is the prophecy just psychological?
The film deliberately leaves the curse ambiguous, treating it as both a genuine shamanic prophecy and a self-fulfilling belief that shapes Saiva's every decision. Every tragedy that befalls her can be read as confirmation of the curse, but it is also the case that her fear of the curse drives her to act in ways that guarantee the very harm she dreads.
Foreshadowing: The dog sacrifice at the start is the first example of Saiva acting violently because of the curse, setting the pattern for everything that follows.
- saiva curse meaning
- self fulfilling prophecy
- psychological
