What Happens in Excuse Me: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Excuse Me (2003) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Ajay is a young boy who lives with his mother Parvati and has a remarkable gift for the sarangi. Seeing his talent, a couple from their village now based in Bangalore take him along in search of better opportunities, along with the village head's spoiled son, Sunil.

As the two boys grow, Ajay becomes a calm, innocent, and humble young man, while Sunil—though good at heart—remains stubborn and headstrong. Ajay one day composes a tune entirely on his own, a moment that sets the story in motion. The melody reaches the ears of a college student named Madhu, and she is immediately drawn to the music and the mystery of its creator.

Madhu admires the tune and the person who imagined it, while Ajay starts to feel a connection to the girl who appreciates his work, even though they have never met and do not know each other’s identities. Their bond grows in the background as the music quietly binds them together.

Meanwhile, the village head's son Sunil sees Madhu, falls for her, and fabricates a story that he is the original composer of the tune she loves. Madhu believes the tale, and the pair are engaged after their families are persuaded. On the other side, Ajay continues to search for the girl who admired his melodies, but his true admirer remains hidden from his sight.

In the climactic moment, Ajay enters a South Indian music competition and presents the tune as his own creation, a decision that infuriates Madhu. She asks Sunil to reveal the truth to everyone, only to learn that Sunil is not the composer and that Ajay is indeed the original mind behind the melody. Sunil’s caretakers reveal the real situation, explaining that Sunil does not know music, while Ajay crafted the tune. Heartbroken, Madhu seeks out Ajay, recognizing him as the person she truly loves and the rightful creator of the beloved melody. The film closes on a note of reconciliation, with the truth prevailing and love reasserting itself.

Excuse Me Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Excuse Me (2003): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Sunil pretend to be the composer of the tune?

Sunil pretends to be the composer because he falls for Madhu and wants to win her affection. Knowing that Madhu loves the melody, Sunil decides to take credit for Ajay's work to make himself appear talented and worthy of her love.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, Sunil is described as stubborn and headstrong, which explains his willingness to use deception rather than honest means to get what he wants.

Q2

Why does Madhu believe Sunil is the composer?

Madhu believes Sunil because he confidently claims to be the original creator of the tune she loves. She has no reason to doubt him since she has never met the real composer and Sunil's claim aligns with his confident demeanor.

Foreshadowing: The story establishes that Madhu only knows the music, not the musician, making her vulnerable to deception.

Q3

What happens when Ajay performs his own tune at the competition?

When Ajay performs the tune at the South Indian music competition, he claims it as his own creation. This angers Madhu because she realizes Ajay is stealing the credit that Sunil had claimed. The performance forces the truth into the open, creating a climactic confrontation.

Foreshadowing: The earlier build-up of Ajay searching for the girl who admired his music foreshadows his need to publicly claim his work.

Q4

Why does Madhu confront Sunil about the truth after Ajay's performance?

After Ajay's performance exposes the tune as his own, Madhu confronts Sunil because she now understands that neither Sunil nor Ajay is being honest. She demands Sunil confess whether he composed the tune, hoping to clear up the confusion and betrayal she feels.

Foreshadowing: Madhu's earlier trust in Sunil makes this betrayal particularly painful when the inconsistency is revealed.

Q5

How does Madhu find out who the real composer is?

Madhu learns the truth when Sunil's caretakers reveal that Sunil knows nothing about music, while Ajay was the one who actually composed the tune. This direct testimony finally exposes Sunil's deception and confirms Ajay as the true creator.

Foreshadowing: The caretakers' earlier role in raising both boys in Bangalore provides them with the knowledge to reveal this truth.

Q6

Why doesn't Ajay reveal himself as the composer earlier?

Ajay never reveals himself because he has never met Madhu and doesn't know her identity. He composes the tune in private and only knows that some girl admired his music. Without knowing who she is, he has no way to claim his work directly to her.

Foreshadowing: The story emphasizes that Ajay and Madhu fall in love without ever meeting or knowing each other's identities, which creates the central misunderstanding.

Q7

What triggers the final confrontation between Madhu and Sunil?

The final confrontation is triggered when Madhu asks Sunil to reveal the truth after Ajay's performance at the competition. Sunil's refusal to admit he lied deepens Madhu's heartbreak and leads her to seek the truth elsewhere, ultimately going to the caretakers.

Foreshadowing: Sunil's persistent refusal to be honest throughout the film sets up this climactic moment where his deception can no longer be sustained.

Q8

How does the music bring Ajay and Madhu together?

The music serves as the invisible connection between Ajay and Madhu. Ajay composes the tune, and Madhu hears it and falls in love with both the melody and the mysterious composer. Their feelings grow through this shared musical experience, even though they never meet until the truth is revealed.

Foreshadowing: The story establishes early on that both characters are drawn together by the music alone, making their eventual reunion feel inevitable.

Q9

Why does Madhu choose Ajay after learning the truth?

Madhu chooses Ajay because she realizes he was always the one she truly loved, not the idea of the composer, but the person behind the music. The truth reveals that Ajay is both the talented musician she admired and someone worthy of her love, unlike Sunil's dishonest pursuit.

Foreshadowing: Madhu's earlier feelings were always directed at the composer, so when she learns Ajay is that person, her love naturally transfers to him.

Q10

Why doesn't Sunil admit the truth when Madhu asks him?

Sunil doesn't admit the truth because he is stubborn and headstrong, as established in his character description. Even when faced with direct confrontation, his pride and fear of losing Madhu prevent him from confessing his deception.

Foreshadowing: Sunil's characterization as stubborn from childhood explains his inability to admit fault even when it would resolve the conflict.
