What Happens in Excess Flesh: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Excess Flesh (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Jealous of her very thin supermodel roommate Jennifer Mary Loveless, the midsized Jill Effie Lavore binges and purges in an attempt to maintain her weight. Their relationship grows tenser as Jennifer mocks Jill's issues, fueling a dangerous spiral that blurs the line between rivalry and fixation. In a chilling act born from anger and insecurity, Jill lashes out and chains Jennifer to the wall, taunting her with food while the apartment fills with a growing sense of decay.

As Jill sinks deeper into her distorted world, the hygiene of both woman and space deteriorates; the apartment becomes cluttered and unclean, a reflection of the unraveling grip on reality. The neighborhood and the film’s other figures— including the love interest and nearby neighbors who come to check on them—seemingly overlook the mounting danger, their concern muffled by the escalating tension between the two women and Jennifer's relentless insults even while restrained.

Jennifer manages to escape at one point, and Jill runs her down on the street just as passing officers glimpse the girls in a state of near undress. Despite the presence of authorities, Jennifer remains silent, a riddle in the eyes of the onlookers. Back at the apartment, Jill pretends to be worried and caring, claiming she wanted to protect Jennifer from insomnia and stress as she restores the scene to a façade of normalcy, including a bath that attempts to showcase concern.

Jennifer's attempts to seek help are cut off when Jill tightens her grip—strangling Jennifer into unconsciousness and trying to restore a sense of control. Pushed to the edge by Jennifer's continual abuse, Jill finally stabs her to death and envisions taking Jennifer's place on the modeling stage, a grim mirror of the life she once coveted. Yet when the scene settles, Jill remains alone in the filthy apartment, and the film leaves the unsettling implication that Jennifer may have existed only in Jill's unraveling mind.

Excess Flesh Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Excess Flesh (2015): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Jill chain Jennifer to the wall?

Jill chains Jennifer to the wall during a violent outburst fueled by anger and insecurity. Jennifer has been constantly mocking Jill's disordered eating and body image issues, and the relentless ridicule pushes Jill over the edge. This act marks the turning point where Jill's obsession transforms into physical captivity, reflecting her desperate attempt to control something in her life when she feels powerless about her own body.

Foreshadowing: Jill's binge-and-purge behavior and growing resentment toward Jennifer's thinness were established early, showing her deteriorating mental state.

Q2

Is Jennifer real or just in Jill's mind?

The film strongly implies that Jennifer may exist only in Jill's fractured mind. The ending shows Jill alone in the filthy apartment with no body, and the unsettling suggestion is that the entire relationship, the supermodel roommate, the mockery, the captivity, was a delusion born from Jill's severe mental illness and eating disorder.

Foreshadowing: Neighbors never directly interact with Jennifer, and the police misinterpret the situation entirely, suggesting she may not be real to others.

Q3

Why doesn't Jennifer ask the police for help?

When police officers see Jill chasing Jennifer on the street in a state of near undress, Jennifer remains silent and does not ask for help. This silence is deliberately puzzling, but it aligns with the film's later revelation, if Jennifer exists only in Jill's mind, she cannot communicate with people outside Jill's perception. The police misinterpret the situation as a domestic dispute and leave.

Foreshadowing: Jennifer never interacts with anyone except Jill throughout the film, even when others are present.

Q4

What triggers Jill to kill Jennifer?

Jill kills Jennifer after a long escalation of captivity, abuse, and psychological torment. Jennifer continues insulting Jill even while restrained, and when Jennifer tries to call for help, Jill strangles her into unconsciousness. Pushed to the edge by what she perceives as endless abuse and unable to maintain control any longer, Jill stabs her to death, believing she can finally take Jennifer's place as the thin ideal she envied.

Foreshadowing: The tension between them escalates continuously from the chaining scene onward, with Jennifer's taunts fueling Jill's rage.

Q5

Why don't the neighbors notice or stop what's happening?

Neighbors and Jill's love interest do come to check on the women, sensing something is wrong, but they fail to recognize the danger. The film portrays them as unable to see past the tense dynamic between the two women and Jennifer's continued insults, even while restrained. Their concern is muffled by the escalating tension, and they ultimately leave without discovering the captive situation, highlighting the isolation of Jill's control.

Foreshadowing: The scene where outside help arrives but fails to reach the danger inside was set up by the growing tension and odd behavior they already noticed.

Q6

What does the ending mean?

The ending shows Jill alone in the filthy apartment, with the implication that Jennifer may never have existed at all. After murdering what she believed was a real person, Jill envisions taking Jennifer's place on the modeling stage, a grim fantasy of becoming the thin ideal she obsessed over. But the scene settles on her isolation in the dirty, empty apartment, confirming her complete mental breakdown and isolation.

Foreshadowing: The entire film hints at Jill's unraveling mind through the deteriorating apartment and her increasingly distorted behavior.

Q7

Why does Jill pretend to care for Jennifer after imprisoning her?

Jill's behavior oscillates between domination and a twisted form of care. After chaining Jennifer, she baths her and claims to be worried about insomnia and stress, presenting herself as protective. This reflects Jill's fractured psyche, she genuinely believes she is helping Jennifer, not harming her. The bathing scene becomes another layer of domination disguised as compassion, showing how Jill rationalizes her control.

Foreshadowing: Jill's distorted perception of reality was evident in her binge-purge cycle and jealousy from the beginning.

Why does Jennifer keep insulting Jill even while restrained?

Jennifer continues insulting Jill even while chained to the wall, which fuels Jill's rage and deepens the psychological torment. Her relentless taunts about Jill's weight and appearance blur the line between punishment and persecution. This behavior makes Jennifer a more complex character, either she is genuinely cruel even in captivity, or, given the twist, these insults may represent Jill's own self-loathing projected outward.

Foreshadowing: Jennifer's mocking nature was established early in their relationship before any violence occurred.
