In the charming city of Hudson, Ohio, Scotty experiences heartbreak when his girlfriend Fiona dumps him right after their high school graduation in 2004. This pivotal moment sets the stage for his subsequent journey of self-discovery and regret.

That evening, Scotty and his best friend Cooper attend a graduation party where a live band performs a song that painfully narrates Fiona's affair with the band's singer, Matt Damon. The emotional turmoil from the performance deepens Scotty's feelings of betrayal.

Returning home drunk and furious, Scotty reads an email from his German pen pal, Mieke, which leads to a revelation about his true feelings for her. Despite Cooper's warning about Mieke potentially being a predator, Scotty's brother helps clarify Mieke's true identity.

While stopping at Crans Sur Mer, Scotty and his friends abandon their plans to visit a local monument and instead head to a nudist beach. Their carefree adventure leads to an awkward encounter with the beach crowd, exposing their naive choices.

Their fun takes a turn when Jamie is robbed in Amsterdam while hiding in an alley. This loss of money, passports, and tickets forces them to navigate the difficulties of hitchhiking through Europe due to language barriers.

In Bratislava, the group takes advantage of a favorable exchange rate to indulge in the local nightlife. Under the effects of absinthe, Jamie and Jenny share an unexpected kiss that surprises everyone in their group.

After managing to secure a ride to Berlin, they discover Mieke is touring in Rome. Desperate to see her, Jamie decides to sell his prized Leica camera to buy plane tickets for the journey.

Upon reaching Vatican City, Scotty's attempts to meet Mieke lead to an unexpected mishap when he accidentally rings a bell, drawing attention to himself. The comical events culminate with Scotty unwittingly appearing on the papal balcony.
