Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) is a devoted housewife who turns her laddoos into a small, home-based enterprise. Her husband Satish (Adil Hussain) and their daughter Sapna (Navika Kotia) often treat her with dismissive humor—mocking her English, questioning the seriousness of her business, and making her feel unseen. Yet their son Sagar (Shivansh Kotia) cherishes her exactly as she is, and Shashi’s mother-in-law (Sulabha Deshpande) offers quiet sympathy that helps her endure the snubs with a stubborn grace.

When Shashi delivers loaves of sweetness to her customers, she sees how much joy her laddoos bring, even as Satish clings to the idea that her work is merely a hobby. She saves every rupee from the cash she earns, imagining a better future for her family even as she bears the weight of their jokes and doubts. The drama intensifies at Sapna’s PTA meeting, where Shashi asks the class teacher, Father Vincent (Ashvin Mathew) to speak in Hindi because her English is not so strong. Sapna’s embarrassment in front of her peers leaves Shashi feeling more fragile, yet the love she has for her family remains intact.

A turning point arrives when Manu (Sujata Kumar), Shashi’s older sister, invites the family to New York for her daughter Meera’s wedding to Kevin. Encouraged by Manu, Shashi decides to travel to the United States to help organize the celebrations, while Satish works on the visa and the rest of the family prepares to join as the wedding approaches. She plans to stay five weeks, bringing along the savings she has worked so hard to accumulate. At the airport she converts her money into dollars, and she is told she cannot take some of her food items on the flight. On the long journey, a fellow passenger offers Shashi some comforting wisdom and practical guidance; the voice behind this encouragement belongs to [Amitabh Bachchan], a memorable beacon of calm in the sky.

New York greets Shashi with warmth as Manu and Radha (Priya Anand) welcome her. They explore Manhattan together, visiting famous spots, while Manu’s life keeps her busy with work. In a neighborhood coffee shop, Shashi endures a humiliating moment—she struggles to read the menu and count out money—until a French chef named Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou) lends a patient ear and offers a helping hand. He is not the only new face in the mix: the English class Shashi secretly enrolls in becomes a lifeline.

To fund her course, Shashi uses the money she saved from her laddoos and joins a four-week conversational English program. The class is led by instructor Cory Hibbs and includes a small, diverse group: Eva, a Mexican nanny (Ruth Aguilar); Salman Khan, a Pakistani cab driver (Sumeet Vyas); Yu Son, a Chinese hairstylist (Maria Romano); Ramamurthy, a Tamil software engineer (Rajeev Ravindranathan); Udumbke, a young African-Caribbean man (Damian Thompson); and Laurent, the French chef (Mehdi Nebbou). The allure of Laurent deepens as he becomes fond of her, yet Shashi remains heartfelt and faithful to her husband and family.

As the weeks pass, Shashi’s confidence rises. She begins watching English-language films to sharpen her listening and comprehension, and she dedicates herself to homework with the perseverance that has always defined her. When the class reaches the moment of truth—a five-minute speech that will earn them a certificate—Shashi’s world expands in new directions. Her family returns to India sooner than expected, and during this period the wedding schedule accelerates. She struggles with balancing the ceremony with the test, missing the critical evaluation, but the bonds she forms with her teachers and classmates endure.

At the wedding, Shashi gives a heartfelt toast in English that surprises everyone who knows her as nothing more than a traditional Indian housewife. She speaks of marriage and family as a sanctuary—an environment where love, mutual respect, and vulnerability are not mocked but celebrated.
