Meanwhile, Ryu Jin-seok’s dark past as a troubled microbiologist, pressured by his mother and driven by unresolved rage, culminates in his disturbing decision to intentionally infect a plane with a deadly virus. His actions reveal a twisted desire for revenge and a lack of regard for human life, ultimately leading to chaos and tragedy. The virus he released was designed to have a long incubation period, allowing it to spread silently before symptoms appeared.

As the virus begins to infect the passengers and crew, panic spreads on the plane. The situation becomes a tense battle of morality and survival. Efforts to land the plane are complicated by international politics and fears that bringing it to the ground could cause an even larger outbreak. Many countries, including the US and Japan, refuse to let the plane land, prioritizing their own populations over the safety of the approximately 300 people onboard.

In the midst of this chaos, the characters show true heroism. The pilots, especially Park Jae-hyuk, despite fearing for their own lives, strive to keep the plane flying safely. Sergeant Koo In-ho, whose wife is onboard, takes desperate measures, including injecting himself with the virus to test the efficacy of the antidote. Meanwhile, the passengers and crew realize that their best hope is to keep the plane airborne and not land, to prevent the virus from spreading further.

Thankfully, BRICOM, the pharmaceutical company involved, provides an antidote after considerable tension and uncertainty. This breakthrough allows the crew to administer the treatment to infected passengers and crew, including Ryu Jin-seok, who ultimately dies on the plane. His death signifies that he has achieved his own twisted end—his desire to die rather than face the consequences of his actions and the destruction he caused.

The plane, low on fuel and amidst intense pressure, is carefully navigated by Pilot Park Jae-hyuk. In a masterful final effort, he manages to land Sky Korea 501 safely, after a harrowing struggle with the aircraft’s limited resources and the urgency to save everyone onboard. The landing is a bittersweet victory—many lives are saved, but the tragedy and loss remain profound. The film closes with a reflection on how human cruelty and obsession with control, as exemplified by Ryu Jin-seok’s actions, can lead to destructive consequences. It leaves viewers pondering the thin line between science and morality, and how human flaws can escalate crises beyond comprehension. Ultimately, the ending emphasizes the resilience of human spirit and the tragic cost of those who seek chaos, leaving a haunting reminder that, in the face of evil, heroism and compassion are essential to survival.
