The climax flips everything we thought we knew about the twins. The woman we have followed all season, believing herself to be the writer Gina, is in fact Leni – the rural sister who disappeared after the robbery. Years ago the twins began swapping lives each birthday, living a whole year as each other. When the farm break‑in happens, Leni discovers that the “missing” person is really Gina, still out of sight and now entangled in a dangerous scheme.

Back in Mt. Echo, Leni slips back into her husband Jack’s world, feigning a head wound and telling him and the sheriff that she was chased by horse thieves. She continues to juggle both identities, pretending that “Gina” is staying at a nearby inn while she pretends to be the victim‑turned‑survivor. Her investigation reveals that Gina, while posing as Leni, had been selling ketamine to dealers, siphoning money from Leni’s accounts, and rekindling a romance with their old lover Dylan.

The series then unspools a darker past: as teenagers Leni set a church ablaze during a tryst with Dylan, unintentionally killing a man who was sleeping inside. Dylan later returns, only to be stabbed by Leni and burned in his car, a murder that Gina finally confesses to Sheriff Floss. Meanwhile, Jack’s illegal horse dealings and the twins’ financial desperation push the police to suspect both sisters of murder and fraud. Leni is arrested, but the authorities can’t prove which twin committed which crime because their identities have been deliberately blurred for years.

Family secrets erupt in the final hour. Their older sister Claudia, confined to a wheelchair after a childhood fall, learns that it was Leni who pushed her, not Gina. Their father Victor, dying of an illness, admits he once helped end their mother’s life‑suffering by drowning her – a scene the twins witnessed but never discussed. As Victor dies, Leni and Gina clash, the house catches fire, and Gina flees into the forest, ultimately leaping into a river, leaving her fate uncertain.

The last scenes show Leni slipping away on a forged passport, boarding a flight to Australia, while a security guard mentions a woman who looks exactly like her had just arrived in Kansas, hinting that Gina might still be alive. Months later, their psychiatrist husband Charlie publishes a book about the whole ordeal. At the launch, a woman who could be either twin asks him a cryptic question; he answers, and she replies that she can no longer tell the difference between herself and her sister. The series ends on that ambiguous note, leaving the audience to wonder which identity—if either—has truly survived.
