In the present, Shane Chasing Horse—a cynical Lakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation—is in trouble with a local gang over money he borrowed. He buys a beautiful ring for Mae Little Wounded, the girl he likes, which deepens his financial peril. The tension sets the stakes for his journey to the powwow.

Shane's mother asks him to drive his grandfather, Pete Chasing Horse, to the powwow. He is reluctant, but the approach of the gang pushes him toward the road. The plan is set to become a road trip infused with storytelling.

As they head toward the powwow, Grandfather Pete promises to give Shane his truck once they arrive. The ride becomes a conduit for stories and lessons. Shane's resistance softens as they travel.

Grandfather begins weaving Lakota myths into the ride, telling of Eagle Boy wooing Bluebird Woman and of a thunder spirit who loves a Mohawk woman. He frames these legends as guidance for the young man’s choices. The stories foreshadow the trials Shane will face.

A redheaded seeker asks to ride with them to learn about Native culture. Shane relents after his grandfather recounts the Kiowa story of Tehan, a white man who lived with the Kiowa. The moment marks a shift toward including outsiders in the journey.

The grandfather tells how Eagle Boy heeds a shining spirit elk and seeks a weapon-bearing old woman. Although repulsed by her ugliness, her transformation into a younger woman provides what he needs. He slays the serpent Uncegila, earning power and prophetic visions.

The gang catches up and pursues Shane, but their car plunges off a cliff into the Rio Grande. Shane dives in to rescue them, a perilous moment mirrored by Eagle Boy’s underwater battle with Uncegila. The violence contrasts their fates and tightens Shane’s resolve.

After the rescue, the gang and the redheaded hitchhiker ride with Shane and his grandfather for a stretch. They eventually leave to travel with a group of attractive Cheyenne women headed to the powwow. The shifting company underscores the unsettled, traveling nature of the journey.

As the road trip continues, the grandfather peppers the storytelling with Coyote and Iktomi the spider tales. He also recounts a Pawnee man and his mother finding unexpected dun pony medicine, expanding the mythic frame. Shane listens, gradually opening to the stories and their meaning.

The grandfather narrates the Quillwork Girl’s quest and her seven star brothers, venturing into the dream world and confronting the Buffalo nation. The tale blends faith, fate, and the Lakota cosmos to echo Shane's own journey. The night sky becomes a canvas for guidance.

Other legends follow: a Chinook woman sacrifices herself to cure a village’s sickness, and a Blackfoot hunter grapples with the memory of his father. Each story deepens the theme of personal sacrifice and ancestral connection. The stories sharpen Shane’s reflections on family and duty.

Shane and his grandfather lose their truck and proceed on horseback and on foot, which brings them closer personally. The bond deepens as they share hardship and stories. They eventually reach Shane’s father’s trailer home, Sam Chasing Horse.

The next morning, Shane makes peace with his estranged father, acknowledging their fractured relationship and seeking a new start. The moment marks a turning point in Shane’s life as he lets go of resentment. The familial reconciliation sits alongside the looming powwow.

Shane discovers that his grandfather died peacefully in his sleep, a shattering loss that deepens his resolve to continue toward the powwow on horseback. He vows his father will be there when he returns, linking family legacy to the journey ahead. The narrative closes with the reveal of Eagle Boy’s ending and Shane’s readiness to face his future.
