David Carroll, a young man, takes over a modest Vermont newspaper. Though attracted to the town’s cultured Dot, he marries Allie Parker, whose parents run the boardinghouse where he lives. In New York, Dot—now a successful costume designer—gets his play produced, and they fall in love. David pledges loyalty to Allie, but when she arrives with her family, he decides to follow Dot to Paris.
