In 1887 Paris, governess Irène looks after Douce, the dowager Countess de Bonafé's granddaughter. Douce loves estate manager Fabien, but their class differences forbid marriage. Their widowed father, Count de Bonafé, is infatuated with Irène. Douce discovers Fabien plans to flee to Quebec with Irène and that the Count intends to marry her, so she tells Fabien and convinces him to run away with her, stunning the family.
