Dog Jack

Jed is a young enslaved boy owned by General Cooper, living at the start of the Civil War. He is under tight control but forms a close bond with his dog Jack and is mentored by Kyle, who has trained him to fight. The story is told from Jed's adult perspective.

Several slaves attempt to flee from the plantation but are captured and punished, highlighting the brutality of slavery. The punishments underscore the oppressive system under which Jed and his peers live. This sets the tone for Jed's awareness of freedom and loyalty as war looms.

Both Jed and Rev. Stewart sign up to serve in the Union Army. The pastor joins in part to monitor Jed and to serve as a chaplain in the medical corps. Jed finds military service harder than expected but gradually proves himself capable with the training he has received.

Casey, a veteran of the Mexican War, provides additional training and mentorship that sharpen Jed's fighting skills. The dog Jack makes small but meaningful contributions to the war effort, aiding in reconnaissance and morale. Jed's confidence grows as his abilities are tested under realistic conditions.
