Disappearance at Clifton Hill

While out fishing and picnicking near Niagara Falls, seven-year-old Abby sneaks away from her family and discovers a young, abused boy hiding in the woods. A couple forcibly stuffs the boy into the trunk of their car and abducts him. Terrified, Abby stays silent about what she witnessed, not yet ready to speak up.

The boy, later named Alex Moulin, disappears and no body is ever found, fueling local rumors and Abby's buried guilt. The incident remains a shadow over Abby's life as she grows up. Abby's silence becomes a defining secret she cannot shake.

Now an adult, Abby returns to Niagara Falls after her mother's death, bringing unresolved guilt and a compulsive tendency to lie with her. Her dishonesty begins to complicate relationships and decisions. She uses the past to hide her present vulnerabilities.

Abby meets Walter Bell, a local conspiracy theorist and podcaster who believes Alex did not die and suspects a larger cover-up by the Lake family in past disappearances. He becomes a vocal ally, feeding Abby new leads and paranoia in equal measure. Their conversations push the investigation forward.

To advance her inquiry, Abby signs documents to sell the motel (using disappearing ink) and gains access to Charlie Lake's office. There she discovers a photo linking the Moulins to Beverly Mole, an animal trainer, which triggers ominous threats from Charlie. The encounter heightens the sense of danger around her probing.

Abby contacts Beverly Mole by offering casino access and a hotel stay at The Rainbow, hoping to dig up more information. Beverly arrives with her husband Gerry, but a dispute at the casino leads to a tense confrontation and Beverly leaves angrily. The scheme yields fragments of the truth but also new risks.

Using her sister Laure's passport, Abby travels to America to see the Magnificent Moulins' magic show. After the show, a tense encounter hints at hidden connections between the Moulins and the case. Returning to Canada, authorities discover the stolen passport and arrest her.

Abby breaks into Beverly Mole's house and discovers Gerry chained up. He confesses that he and Beverly kidnapped Alex to blackmail the Moulins. The police arrest Beverly and recover crucial incriminating evidence that links them to the scheme.

Gerry's confession triggers a media frenzy as the town's secrets spill into the public eye. Charlie Lake is arrested, still proclaiming his innocence. The Moulins manipulate the media, pleading ignorance while threatening lawsuits to shield themselves.

Life returns to a semblance of normal as Abby moves to a more upscale motel. A man with an eye patch checks in, suggesting a deeper link to the case and implying that Lake may have saved the boy. Abby is left pondering the unseen truth that lingers in the town.
