Diary of a Nymphomaniac

Val's relationship ends when Alex, fed up with Val's sexual needs, breaks up with her. After the breakup, Val goes to an empty train station and meets a stranger, with whom she has sex.

Val confides in her grandmother about her sex life. The grandmother encourages her to live freely and suggests keeping a diary for clarity.

Hassan visits Barcelona and Val leaves work early to see him and be intimate. The next day she arrives late to work, and her employer fires her.

Val attends two job interviews; the second interviewer, Jaime, is attracted to her and asks her out. She agrees to go on a date with him.

Val decides not to have sex with Jaime after their first date. Jaime soon buys an expensive home for both of them, which makes Val uneasy about the relationship.

Val visits her ill grandmother, who eventually dies. Around the same time, Val and Jaime move in together.

Jaime's mood swings escalate into abuse; he storms into Val's office accusing her boss of having sex with her. He later brings a prostitute to their home and asks Val to pay her.

Val decides to end the relationship and move out. While Val is packing with the help of her friend Sonia, Jaime appears and threatens her; they manage to leave and go to Sonia's house.

Sonia tracks Val to a small, run-down apartment where she has fallen on hard times. Unemployed and having lost all her savings, Val contemplates suicide but ultimately decides against it.

Desperate for money, Val begins working as a prostitute in a brothel controlled by a madam. She meets Cindy, a Brazilian coworker, and the two women grow close.

Val falls for Giovanni, who books her repeatedly but plans to give her to a friend. Pedro tries to control her with money and aggressive sex, and Val escapes from his hotel.

Cindy kills herself by jumping from a window at the brothel. Val reevaluates her life and tells the madam she wants to leave, but the madam tries to coerce her to stay and threatens her. Val remains determined to leave.

Val informs Sonia that she has left the brothel and returns to her apartment. She finds a peeping man living in her building, but when he offers her nothing, she says money is not necessary, signaling a return to a free-spirited life.
