In Mumbai, Raj Chopra, a down-on-his-luck film director whose recent releases have bombed, faces mounting pressure from a threatening landlord and ruthless creditors who warn him of eviction if he cannot settle his debts. At the same time, Anand Pawar, a chartered accountant, tries to lift the mood of his girlfriend Neha Chattopadhayay — also known as Basanti — by whisking her to a luxurious birthday dinner in a top city restaurant. The two men’ s paths cross with a twist of fate when Raj and Ratan signaled by Aryan Kapoor’s manager, Ratan and Aryan Kapoor, arrive to chase a big movie deal.
As the evening unfolds, Raj and Ratan order more food than they can cover and somehow charge the entire bill to Anand, who cannot pay and ends up behind bars. When Anand is released, a burning thirst for revenge drives him to spy on Raj as he shopslift—an act that is captured on film by Anand himself. A chain of misfortune pushes Raj toward Aryan and Ratan, where the moment he hands over the movie contract papers, an inspector arrives and arrests him for the shoplifting incident captured earlier by Anand. Raj narrowly escapes from jail, only to be attacked again, and is saved by Anand in a surprising turn of camaraderie.
From there, the two men hatch a plan to pretend they are wealthy enough to back a film, hoping to secure funds and a distribution deal. They borrow money from a well-known gangster to finance the project, and they recruit Neha for the actress role because Anand believes her presence will ensure the project’s flop and, consequently, a quick profit. In the writers’ room, Parvez Asharraf — the figure behind the script — blends influences from classic Hindi cinema, weaving together threads inspired by Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Gadar, and Lagaan in a playful, chaotic sequence of happenings. The premiere arrives with a surprising declaration: the film is labeled a “hit,” throwing the protagonists and their scheme into sharp relief as a pair of assassins close in.
As Raj races to run away with the money, he discovers Anand has already looted the entire stash, leaving both men on the run and forcing them to rethink their choices. The chase leads them back to the confines of the law, and the duo ends up behind bars again, this time for the fraud surrounding the film. When they finally earn their release, they share a long-awaited moment of reconciliation, and Neha and Anand rekindle their relationship. With hard lessons learned and a renewed sense of purpose, the two vow to try again and embark on the journey to make another film, this time with a clearer understanding of the price of deceit and the value of friendship.
