In Mumbai, Raj Chopra, a down-on-his-luck film director whose recent releases have bombed, faces mounting pressure from a threatening landlord and ruthless creditors who warn him of eviction if he cannot settle his debts. At the same time, Anand Pawar, a chartered accountant, tries to lift the mood of his girlfriend Neha Chattopadhayay — also known as Basanti — by whisking her to a luxurious birthday dinner in a top city restaurant. The two men’ s paths cross with a twist of fate when Raj and Ratan signaled by Aryan Kapoor’s manager, Ratan and Aryan Kapoor, arrive to chase a big movie deal.

As the evening unfolds, Raj and Ratan order more food than they can cover and somehow charge the entire bill to Anand, who cannot pay and ends up behind bars. When Anand is released, a burning thirst for revenge drives him to spy on Raj as he shopslift—an act that is captured on film by Anand himself. A chain of misfortune pushes Raj toward Aryan and Ratan, where the moment he hands over the movie contract papers, an inspector arrives and arrests him for the shoplifting incident captured earlier by Anand. Raj narrowly escapes from jail, only to be attacked again, and is saved by Anand in a surprising turn of camaraderie.

From there, the two men hatch a plan to pretend they are wealthy enough to back a film, hoping to secure funds and a distribution deal. They borrow money from a well-known gangster to finance the project, and they recruit Neha for the actress role because Anand believes her presence will ensure the project’s flop and, consequently, a quick profit. In the writers’ room, Parvez Asharraf — the figure behind the script — blends influences from classic Hindi cinema, weaving together threads inspired by Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Gadar, and Lagaan in a playful, chaotic sequence of happenings. The premiere arrives with a surprising declaration: the film is labeled a “hit,” throwing the protagonists and their scheme into sharp relief as a pair of assassins close in.

As Raj races to run away with the money, he discovers Anand has already looted the entire stash, leaving both men on the run and forcing them to rethink their choices. The chase leads them back to the confines of the law, and the duo ends up behind bars again, this time for the fraud surrounding the film. When they finally earn their release, they share a long-awaited moment of reconciliation, and Neha and Anand rekindle their relationship. With hard lessons learned and a renewed sense of purpose, the two vow to try again and embark on the journey to make another film, this time with a clearer understanding of the price of deceit and the value of friendship.

Q2

Why did Anand help Raj after being arrested because of him?

A.

After Anand was released from jail, he became obsessed with revenge and stalked Raj, eventually catching him shoplifting on camera. When Raj was about to sign a major film contract with Aryan Kapoor, Anand tipped off the inspector about the shoplifting, causing Raj's arrest and derailing the deal. However, when Raj escaped from jail and was attacked, Anand saved him, turning their rivalry into an unlikely partnership. Q3

Why did Anand and Raj cast Neha as the lead actress?

A.

Anand and Raj planned to make a film designed to fail deliberately so they could profit from the losses. They believed that casting Neha, an untested aspiring actress with no film experience, would guarantee the film's failure and attract insurance payouts or quick settlement deals. Anand was confident Neha's involvement would tank the movie, making their scheme work. It's ironic because Neha was actually Anand's girlfriend.

Q4

Why was the film declared a hit when it was made to fail?

A.

Despite being designed to flop with an inexperienced cast and a ridiculous script that blended elements from Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Gadar, and Lagaan, the film paradoxically became a hit at the premiere. This unexpected success caught Raj and Anand completely off guard and created new problems, as the film's sudden popularity attracted dangerous attention from assassins who wanted the money.

Why did the inspector arrive exactly when Raj was signing the contract?

A.

Anand had been stalking Raj and recorded his shoplifting incident on camera. Just as Raj was about to sign the lucrative film contract with Aryan Kapoor, Anand tipped off the police about the shoplifting. The inspector arrived at that precise moment to arrest Raj, derailing the deal completely. Anand used the timing strategically to destroy Raj's chance at a legitimate comeback.

Anand filmed Raj shoplifting earlier, and his desire for revenge drove him to use this evidence at the worst possible moment.

Why were assassins trying to kill Raj and Anand after the film succeeded?

A.

The assassins were drawn by the film's sudden success and the money at stake. Q9

What was the script writer Parvez Asharraf's approach to the film?

A.

Parvez Asharraf, the writer hired for the film, created a chaotic script that blended elements from four classic Hindi films: Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Gadar, and Lagaan. This mash-up was deliberately ridiculous, meant to ensure the film would fail spectacularly. Despite, or perhaps because of, this absurd combination, the film paradoxically found unexpected success with audiences.

Q10

Why did Neha agree to act in a film meant to fail?

A.

Neha was an aspiring actress desperate for her big break in Bollywood. She likely didn't know the film was intentionally designed to fail, Anand and Raj kept their true scheme hidden from her. The opportunity to be the lead actress in a feature film, even a dubious one, was too good to pass up for someone trying to launch their career in the industry.
