Devil in a Blue Dress

In the summer of 1948, Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins finds himself out of work at Champion Aircraft in Los Angeles and struggling to pay his mortgage. Seeking help, he turns to his bartender friend, Joppy, who introduces him to a white private investigator named DeWitt Albright, tasked with locating a missing woman named Daphne Monet. Easy feels a wave of anxiety at the prospect of meeting DeWitt, as it stirs memories of a troubled past in Houston involving a man named Mouse, who had dragged him into a murder that he insists he did not commit.

DeWitt explains that Daphne’s mysterious disappearance has impacted her wealthy fiancé, Todd Carter, who subsequently withdrew from the Los Angeles mayoral race. With promises of payment, Easy is enlisted to track down Daphne, a woman known for frequenting the juke joints along Central Avenue.

Easy begins his investigation at an underground club where he witnesses a bouncer named Junior Fornay forcefully removing a rowdy white patron. During the night, he learns from Coretta James, the girlfriend of his friend Dupree Brouchard, that Daphne has ties to gangster Frank Green. This prompts DeWitt to organize a meeting at Malibu pier, where Easy is confronted by a group of racist youths before DeWitt intervenes, humiliating one of them at gunpoint, which gives them time to escape.

Upon returning home, Easy faces a grim reality when LAPD detectives inform him of Coretta’s murder, leaving him traumatized and beaten during their interrogation. Just when things seem bleak, he encounters Matthew Terell, the remaining mayoral candidate, who probes him about Daphne. But he remains silent. After suffering a nightmare about Coretta, he receives an unexpected call from Daphne, leading them to meet at the Ambassador Hotel. There, they discuss the tragic events surrounding Coretta’s death, and Daphne reveals her connection to another man named Richard McGee.

As their search intensifies, Easy realizes the deadly risks involved when Albright threatens him, demanding he find Daphne or face dire consequences. Easy enlists the help of his friend Mouse and confronts Joppy, who he believes has led him into this grim situation. Striking a chilling deal with Todd Carter reveals that Albright is in cahoots with Terell, which leads him to another payment to aid his search.

When Easy attempts to pursue a lead regarding Frank Green, things spiral out of control as he finds himself ambushed but is saved by Mouse. Their investigation brings them to the crux of the matter, exposing dark secrets linked to Terell as they uncover incriminating evidence against him.

With the stakes growing higher, Daphne’s life is put in jeopardy as Albright and his men kidnap her. In a desperate bid for justice, Easy and Mouse confront Albright, leading to a climactic showdown where they rescue Daphne from danger. The aftermath reveals darker truths about power and betrayal, including the horrifying reality of Coretta’s murder.

In a twist of fate, Daphne compensates Easy and Mouse for the damaging photographs that threaten the political landscape, and as tensions subside, Easy contemplates a fresh start as a private investigator, free from the shadows of his turbulent past. As Daphne and her brother depart in the wake of political machinations, Easy is finally at peace with his choices and the new opportunities that lie ahead.
