Set against the turbulent backdrop of 1980s India, the film follows Gurshan Singh Somal, a quiet farmer trying to hold his family together as violence and distrust swell around them. He lives in rural Punjab with his aging parents, Gurdev Singh and Tej Kaur Somal, and his unmarried sister, Guddi. When Gurshan becomes engaged to Jassi Sandhu, the daughter of the local Station House Officer, the couple’s hopeful future collides with a brutal shift in law enforcement and politics. The world suddenly shifts from quiet village life to fear, as a drive-by shooting claims Jassi’s father and a new, corrupt officer named Randhawa takes charge, aiming to meet a quota of “terrorist” deaths through fake police encounters.

Despite the danger, the bond between Gurshan and Jassi endures and they marry, even as the family grapples with suspicion and violence. The peace is shattered when a duffel bag of automatic weapons is discovered in the Somal household, and Gurshan is arrested and beaten—his insistence on innocence is met with pressure and intimidation, as real terrorists seem to loom over his family. A deputation from the town pleads for his release, but the climate of fear in the area only grows more oppressive, and Guddi witnesses the brutality up close, even as she faces her own trials under a brutal policewoman.

Amidst this turmoil, Gurshan’s American-based friend, Darshan Singh Gill, arrives to help. He arranges for Gurshan to travel to the United States as a hockey player, a move that grants him an asylum and opens the door to a new life. In America, Gurshan takes a modest job in a corner store, while Jassi works as a gas station attendant, and he starts to build a life far from the danger that followed him home. Yet the pull of family remains strong: he learns that his father has suffered a heart attack, and the urge to return to India grows stronger, even as leaving the country could jeopardize his newly granted asylum. Ultimately, Gurshan makes the difficult choice to return and, despite the risks, works to fulfill his obligations back home.

Back in India, he manages to reunite with the family and oversee Guddi’s forthcoming marriage, a testament to his commitment to his sister and to keeping promises even as the net tightens around him. But the pressure mounts as authorities close in, and Gurshan finds himself pursued by the very system that once offered him refuge. In a final, devastating turn, he is struck down by a police bullet, a violent end that underscores the film’s unflinching look at the era’s heavy-handed measures. The story closes with a stark meditation on loyalty, national belonging, and the way fear and greed can twist the actions of both rulers and those who serve them.
