The movie opens with Jim McBride and Joyce Collins waking up to their alarm clock. Jim shares that he's been having recurring dreams about being underwater, prompting Joyce to comment that it's the third time this has happened.

Jim and the crew prepare to embark on their mission aboard the submersible DSRV2 from the SEATRAK installation. During the descent underwater, Jim discusses their grueling six-month stint with fellow pilot James Richardson.

Upon arrival, they pick up a location transponder from Deep Star 6, prompting Snyder to contact them about their tardiness. This interaction foreshadows growing tensions within their mission as they initiate their work.

As the crew docks at Deep Star 6, John Hodges wakes up after dozing off on the journey. He warns the crew to conduct sonographic scans to check for geological faults before they begin excavation.

During breakfast, Captain Laidlaw orders Mia Scarpelli to take a full day off to recover, despite her insistence of having too much work to do. This moment establishes Laidlaw's authoritative nature amidst the crew’s growing challenges.

Dr. John Van Gelder contacts Joyce to discuss discrepancies in their findings. He demands the collapse of a cavern that poses a safety risk, despite Mia’s objections, highlighting the conflict between protocol and research opportunity.

Dr. Diane Norris examines Snyder's skin rash, fearing it could jeopardize their mission. As time progresses, Snyder's health problem raises anxiety and suspicion among the crew, complicating their already tense situation.

The team deploys an underwater tractor to access the cavern, which leads to a significant explosion that results in the seafloor collapsing. They must hastily retreat to avoid an even greater catastrophe.
