A U.S. military satellite program loses control under head scientist Forsythe. The team realizes they cannot prevent the crash within the next two hours. The satellite contains a biological weapon and a sentient creature nicknamed Sentar. Forsythe informs General Randolph about the situation.

General Randolph orders remote destruction of the satellite's payload. Forsythe is reluctant and minimizes the risks, arguing the creature may not wake. The decision sets a tense frame for the unfolding crisis.

A sleeping creature is disturbed when a couple passes by, waking it and causing its release. The couple is killed as the monster escapes from its containment. The incident marks the first moments of the nightmare to come.

The creature makes its way toward Los Angeles, unleashing terror as it moves through populated areas. The city becomes the primary target of the unknown threat. Public safety officials scramble to respond.

Lieutenant Ian McLemore is introduced to Carla Sandbourn, a newly transferred officer. Their superior, Captain Robertson, tries to keep Sandbourn from partnering with him due to McLemore’s dangerous reputation. Tension between investigators and command grows.

McLemore receives a warning from a psychic caller but refuses to take the line. He and Merris travel to Innsmouth Road, where they uncover a double homicide and discover a large pod along with smaller ones.

McLemore and Merris steal two smaller pods to investigate, fearing a cover-up. The large pod is transported to the local forensics lab for analysis.

In the forensics lab, examiner Rogers is hacked to pieces by an unseen force. Forensics reports fragments of an unknown metal not matching any known material. The investigation deepens the mystery.

Military Police, led by a mysterious suited man, bar investigators from re-entering the scene. The same man is later seen leaving Robertson's office, and the deaths are ruled accidental despite evident anomalies.

The psychic Lady Elaine Wentworth calls Merris' home, claiming she knows what happened the previous night. The suspicious call adds another thread to the unfolding conspiracy.

Sandbourn joins McLemore as they consult an entomologist. The pod is drilled open and the creature attacks the entomologist and Sandbourn. The monster is destroyed in a gas-filled terrarium.

McLemore recalls Merris' pod and they head to Merris' home to investigate. The pod has hatched and Merris is killed, triggering a chase as a second creature stirs into life.

Elaine calls Merris' home to reveal the location of the original creature. McLemore and Sandbourn locate it, and Sandbourn calls for backup to secure the threat.

The creature fights McLemore in a tense confrontation. With distraction from Sandbourn and Robertson, McLemore gains the upper hand and decapitates the creature with a chainsaw.
