The night after a party, a group of four survivors awakes to a hotel in crisis, awakened by a chilling voice from the emergency intercom urging an immediate evacuation. They—a rapper named Sam B., a hotel receptionist who secretly works for the Hong Kong Government as a spy, a former American football star, and an ex-detective turned bodyguard—quickly realize that a contagious virus has swept through the population, turning most people into psychopathic, flesh-eating killers. In the chaos, they are briefly overwhelmed by one of the infected, but are unexpectedly rescued by a lifeguard named John Sinamoi, whose appearance becomes a lifeline in a world spiraling toward survival.
As the survivors come to terms with their bizarre immunity, a hush falls over the hotel—The Voice that promised guidance has gone quiet. With Sinamoi’s uneasy trust that help might be found beyond the resort, they set out to scavenge supplies and locate any chance to reach the outside world. They are joined by Jin, the daughter of a bitten mechanic who has helped them repurpose an armored vehicle to break through the barricaded grounds. The journey pulls them from the resort to the island city of Moresby, a place where danger lurks around every corner.
In Moresby, the group confronts a new and deadly threat—the Ram, a formidable infected foe that tests their resolve in close-quarters combat. They lend aid to a holdout inside a barricaded church, and their path windily leads them toward the wealthier sectors of town before they attempt a desperate raid on a supermarket controlled by the ruthless Raskol gangs. Jin’s attempt to broker more supplies with another faction of the Raskol leads her to an abandoned police station, where she is captured and brutalized. The gang that captures her later falls to the hands of the Raskol criminals, who rescue Jin, but the moment sours the dynamic of the group, angling Sam and Logan into protective, uneasy stances toward Jin.
Returning to the resort, the survivors finally connect with The Voice once more, this time revealing Colonel Ryder White—the commander of the Banoi Island Defense Force, who is trapped in a high-security prison on a distant island accessible only through treacherous jungle routes. White claims that because of the survivors’ unusual immunity, a cure or vaccine might be developed, offering the hope of saving his own bitten wife. He sends them back into the jungle in search of a smuggler named Mowen, who has the means to reach the prison.
Mowen proves stubborn, blocking the direct route but guiding the group to a lab that studies the virus. There, researchers deduce that the infection is a mutation of Kuru that sprang from the indigenous population. At the urging of the scientists, the survivors collect a tissue sample from a native mummy to study the pre-mutation form of Kuru and rescue Yerema, a native woman who was nearly sacrificed by her tribe. After a tense negotiation, Mowen agrees to drive the survivors to the prison, and they rush back to the lab when White reports a developing complication.
What follows is a cascade of shock: the lab’s experiments have released a race of zombies, and only Yerema remains alive to witness the catastrophe. The survivors orchestrate a desperate rescue of Yerema and recover what appears to be a prototype vaccine before making for the prison island.
On arrival, the survivors assist the remaining prisoners in arming themselves, hoping this will help them reach White. Yet White’s plan unravels the moment he reaches the survivors again: he intends to abandon the prisoners to die and call in a nuclear strike to purge the island. A race to the rooftop helipad ensues as White holds them at gunpoint. Jin, repulsed by White’s genocidal plan, frees White’s zombified wife, who bites White on the wrist. White kills his wife and shoots Jin, then injects himself with the vaccine—only to see it accelerate and amplify his own mutation. The survivors rally, killing White, and escape the island aboard his helicopter as Kevin, a tech-savvy prisoner, declares that things will never be the same again.
