Dead Man

William Blake, an accountant from Cleveland, boards a train to the frontier town of Machine. Excited yet anxious about his new job at the local metalworks, he sets off on his life-changing journey.

During the train ride, Blake encounters a fireman who ominously warns him against taking the job in Machine. This cryptic advice foreshadows the troubles Blake will face upon arrival.

Upon reaching Machine, Blake is confronted with hostility from the townspeople. Despite his hopes for a warm welcome, he finds himself at odds with the community from the outset.

Blake discovers that the accounting position he was promised has been filled. John Dickinson, the company owner, meets Blake with a gun, threatening him and driving him out of town.

In despair, Blake meets Thel Russell, a former prostitute who sells paper flowers. Seeking companionship, he follows her home, hoping to find solace in her presence.

Thel's ex-boyfriend Charlie arrives unexpectedly, leading to a violent confrontation. In a chaotic struggle to protect Blake, Thel is tragically killed, leaving him devastated.

In a desperate act of self-defense, Blake kills Charlie with Thel’s gun. This brutal confrontation forces him to flee on Charlie’s horse, marking a turning point in his life.

After escaping, Blake wakes up to find Nobody, a large Native American man, trying to heal him. Nobody reveals that Blake is essentially a walking dead man, which sets the tone for their journey.

Convinced that Blake is the reincarnation of the poet William Blake, Nobody decides to accompany him towards the Pacific Ocean. They begin a treacherous journey together, bound by fate.

Nobody believes it is time for Blake to undergo a vision quest, leaving him in the wilderness. Blake confronts inner demons, facing haunting visions and killing U.S. Marshals in a desperate fight for survival.

Blake mourns the death of a fawn, painting his face with its blood as a way to reconnect with his emotions. This ordeal deepens his bond with Nobody and solidifies his transformation.

At a trading post, Blake faces a prejudiced missionary who attempts to kill him. In a shocking turn of events, the missionary meets his demise with Blake's hands, showcasing Blake's survival instinct.

After sustaining more injuries, Nobody rushes Blake towards a nearby Makah village. Upon arriving, the villagers are deeply moved by Blake’s suffering, witnessing his collapse from torment.

Blake awakens in a canoe covered with a Native American funeral shawl. Nobody expresses heartfelt sorrow as he says goodbye, sending Blake off to sea to meet his fate.

As Blake drifts away on the ocean, he witnesses a tragic confrontation between Nobody and Cole Wilson. In his last moments, Blake finds peace as he gazes towards the sky, succumbing to his injuries.
