As the First World War draws near, a gripping saga unfolds in the harsh landscape of the Texas Panhandle. Bill, a tough manual laborer from the steel mills of Chicago, finds himself fleeing from the law after a tragic confrontation with his boss leads to devastating consequences. Accompanied by his passionate girlfriend, Abby, and their spirited young sister Linda, they embark on a perilous odyssey to evade the repercussions of their actions.

Disguised as siblings, Bill and Abby adopt new identities and join a group of seasonal workers under the guidance of a reclusive yet affluent farmer. Settling into their altered lives, Bill stumbles upon a shocking truth: the farmer is battling an unnamed illness and has only a few months left to live.

As the farmer’s affections for Abby begin to blossom, Bill devises a plan to secure their financial future by orchestrating a marriage between Abby and the farmer. The deception seems to work initially, but fate intervenes unexpectedly. The farmer’s health stabilizes, leaving Bill’s scheme impotent. Underlying tensions escalate as the farmer uncovers the truth about Bill and Abby’s relationship, while Abby finds herself drawn to her new husband.

Then, disaster strikes as a catastrophic swarm of locusts and ensuing fires ravage the farmer’s wheat fields, igniting his rage. In a frantic attempt to reclaim his property, he pursues Bill at gunpoint. The conflict escalates when Bill, armed only with a screwdriver, fights back, ultimately leading to the farmer’s demise.

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the farmer’s foreman and law enforcement team up to hunt down the trio. In a dramatic final stand, Bill makes the ultimate sacrifice, facing a barrage of bullets as he tries to escape. With the farmer’s estate now in her possession, Abby boards a train destined for Europe, where soldiers are poised to head into World War I. Meanwhile, Linda rebels against the constraints of boarding school and escapes with a childhood friend from their farm, leaving behind uncertainty and unresolved tensions in her wake.
