Dark Angel: The Ascent

Veronica, a young demoness, grows tired of her father Hellikan's harsh rules. Hellikan tries to kill her, but her mother Theresa intervenes and stops him. Veronica escapes with her hellhound, Hellraiser, fleeing the demon realm.

Veronica slips through a secret opening to the surface and lands in a city via the sewers. As she steps onto Earth, her demon form sheds away, revealing a human appearance, leaving her naked. She quickly finds clothes but remains disoriented.

Veronica is struck by a car in the city streets. Dr. Max Barris, a nearby doctor, tends to her injuries at the scene and later in the hospital. Despite her odd behavior, he begins to feel a growing attachment.

Max allows Veronica to stay at his house since she has nowhere else to go. She discovers horrors on the nightly news and is deeply saddened by the sinfulness of the world and by the mayor's evil.

Veronica goes out at night to police the streets and intervenes in a brutal mugging, killing the two assailants. Hellraiser feeds on their flesh. A city-wide investigation begins as the crime scene notes reference her involvement.

Veronica kills two white policemen who harass a Black civilian, further stirring the investigators. She leaves a threatening note at the second crime scene along with some hospital clothes. The case draws the detectives to Max's home and hospital.

At Veronica's home, a heavenly messenger speaks to her mother Theresa, revealing that Veronica has been chosen by God to cleanse the world of sin. The revelation expands the suspicion toward Veronica among locals. The family begins to worry about the implications.

Detectives tail Veronica and Max to a pornographic film and then to a nightclub, following their movements through the city. Veronica's escalating presence draws more attention from bystanders and investigators. The pursuit heightens tension as the night unfolds.

Max's old friend flirts with him in the nightclub and Veronica insults her. Veronica heads to the bathroom to confront her rival, but a frightened man hiding in a stall stabs Veronica with a switchblade, causing her to falter. The senior detective arrives at the door, adding pressure to the case.

Veronica telepathically reveals the eternal horrors that await sinners to the senior detective, who becomes incoherent and abandons the case. Max tends Veronica's wound and the two share a healing moment as he sews the wound without anesthetic.

Max tends Veronica's wound and they have sex that night. Veronica's true demon form appears and Max accepts her. He asks if she is responsible for the murders, and she confirms, saying the victims were evil.

Veronica travels to the mayor's house and projects the same telepathic vision of eternal suffering onto him. The mayor screams in agony as the vision overwhelms him. As she runs away, one of the mayor's guards shoots her in the back.

Veronica's parents receive a message that she must be taken home to bathe in the river Styx to heal her. A heavenly messenger later tells Max that Veronica needs to go home instead of staying with him.

Max and Veronica decide to seek hospital care, but the heavenly messenger instructs them to return Veronica home. They depart, uncertain of her fate.

A few days later, Veronica appears in Max's room in a ball of fire, prompting Max to exclaim, 'Thank God!' The film ends with Veronica's reappearance, suggesting a renewed cycle of cleansing or a last resolution.
