Dangerous Ground

Vusi was forced to flee South Africa after organizing a radical student protest in 1983. The protest was quickly crushed by police, and Vusi was captured. To avoid further persecution, he escaped to the United States and eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, remaining in exile for fourteen years.

Vusi hesitates to slaughter the cow because he has lived in the United States for fourteen years and has become disconnected from his homeland's traditions. This moment reveals the cultural rift between his modern life abroad and the traditional customs of his village, causing tension with his brother Ernest who criticizes him for abandoning their homeland during the struggle.

Muki holds Vusi responsible for Steven's debt of 45,000 rand. When Vusi comes looking for Steven, Muki learns that Vusi is Steven's brother and extends the debt obligation to him. Muki gives Vusi an ultimatum: deliver 15,000 dollars within two days or the entire Madlazi family will be killed.

Muki shoots Steven with Vusi's own gun during a confrontation at the hotel. When Steven confronts Muki about the debt and the destruction of his apartment, the situation escalates. Muki uses Vusi's gun, which was given to him earlier during the confrontation with white supremacists, to kill Steven. A detective sergeant witnesses the murder.

Karen is Steven's neighbor in Johannesburg. She reveals that Steven had borrowed cocaine on credit from Muki and was planning to earn money for a trip to the United States. After leaving a hard-rock club, two white supremacist punks attack Vusi and Karen. One renders Karen unconscious while others pin Vusi to a wall. Vusi overpowers them, and Karen hands him a gun for defense. This incident shows Vusi's survival skills and builds tension, while also giving Vusi the weapon Muki later uses to kill Steven.

The gun Vusi obtains here becomes the weapon Muki uses to shoot Steven.

Ernest, a former soldier, constantly criticizes Vusi for fleeing to the United States instead of staying to fight against apartheid. He taunts Vusi about running away, culminating in Vusi's retort that he was in the struggle while Ernest was still a child. Despite this tension, Ernest ultimately helps Vusi seek revenge against Muki after Steven's death.

Karen suggests they go to Sun City because Steven had headed there to gamble and try to recover the money to pay off his debt to Muki. The pair travels through an Afrikaner rally to reach the casino, hoping to find Steven and a way to raise the 15,000 dollars needed to save their lives.

After Muki is killed, Karen considers entering a rehabilitation facility for her crack cocaine addiction. However, Vusi invites her to join him and his fiancée in the village for a chance at a new life together, suggesting they can start fresh as a family.
