In the bustling metropolis of New York, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) finds herself caught in a web of contradictions. By day, she grinds away as a journalist at a gardening magazine, yet her true passion lies in the glamorous world of fashion, where she dreams of writing for the prestigious Alette. On her way to a crucial interview at Alette, she becomes entranced by a striking green scarf that seems to call out to her. However, when her credit card fails her, she concocts a story about gifting the scarf to her ailing aunt just to get her hands on it.

Determined, Rebecca arrives at Alette only to learn that the role she sought has been filled internally. Fortunately, another opportunity at the financial magazine Successful Saving awaits her. It is here that Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), the editor, enters her life as a guiding figure. During their first encounter, Rebecca inadvertently leaves the green scarf hidden outside, a clandestine hint of the financial troubles that plague her.

As the sun sets, Rebecca and her best friend Suze indulge in a wild night, and while having fun, they mistakenly send letters to the wrong magazine. The following day, she receives a call informing her that she has been hired by Successful Saving, a decision largely influenced by Luke, who appreciates her writing talent and publishes it under the pseudonym “The Girl in the Green Scarf.” The column quickly garners attention in business circles, even leading her parents to suggest that she reads her own published pieces.

As her career skyrockets, Rebecca must grapple with the complexities of newfound fame. With the spotlight on her, she faces multiple challenges, such as fending off incessant harassment from her debt collector, Derek Smeath (Derek Smeath), who continually demands payment for her debts.

In a valiant attempt to regain control over her life, Rebecca attends Shopaholics Anonymous, where she faces the harsh realities of her spending habits. This journey places her at a pivotal crossroads: will she continue to live beyond her means, or will she seek a healthier balance between her desires and financial constraints?

Just when it seems she might be running out of options, Rebecca’s father offers to sell his beloved RV to alleviate her debt. However, she firmly refuses, cherishing the camper’s sentimental value as a symbol of hard work and dedication. Her newfound conviction to face her mistakes head-on demonstrates her growth as a character.

An opportunity to return to Alette presents itself, but Rebecca declines when it becomes clear that accepting the position would require her to forsake her values for fraudulent reporting. This marks a significant moment, reflecting her determination to be authentic and truthful in every aspect of her life.

In a proactive step towards financial recovery, Rebecca rallies her fellow Shopaholics Anonymous members to help organize an auction of her gently worn clothing. The event is a tremendous success, culminating in the sale of her beloved green scarf for an impressive $300. With this windfall, she settles her debts with Derek, making the payment in pennies to symbolize her newly found freedom.

As she retrieves her cherished bridesmaid’s dress and arrives at Suze’s wedding, the two friends finally mend their bond. Despite the temptation to indulge in shopping after the ceremony, Rebecca chooses a path of self-discipline and introspection.

A serendipitous encounter with Luke leads to a heartwarming reunion of the scarf, revealing that his agent was its unexpected buyer. This moment burgeons into a blossoming romance as the two embark on a journey together at Brandon Communications, heralding the dawn of an exciting new chapter in both their careers and their lives.
