In New York City, Rebecca Bloomwood works as a journalist for a gardening magazine. Despite her job, her heart lies in the fashion industry, where she dreams of writing for Alette, a prestigious fashion publication.

On her way to a crucial job interview, Rebecca becomes captivated by a striking green scarf that she feels compelled to purchase. Unfortunately, her credit card fails to work, prompting her to fabricate a story about gifting it to her sick aunt.

Upon arriving at Alette for her interview, Rebecca discovers that the position she hoped for has already been filled. However, she soon finds out about an available role at Successful Saving, a financial magazine, providing her with a new opportunity.

During her first day at Successful Saving, Rebecca meets Luke Brandon, the magazine's editor, who becomes an influential figure in her life. Their initial interaction leads Rebecca to forget the green scarf, a symbol of her mounting financial troubles.
