At the end of the film, Lena and Daniel manage to escape from Colonia Dignidad through a secret tunnel and reach the Chilean border. They seek help from the German embassy, which promises to send them on a flight out of the country. However, they are betrayed when an embassy officer appears to work with Pius, the cult leader, and locks them in a room. Realizing it’s a trap, Lena and Daniel escape through the window and try to make it to the airport. A tense chase ensues as they are pursued by Pius and his men, but they ultimately manage to reach the plane with the evidence of the colony’s atrocities—photos Daniel took of the horrors inside the colony. Even as the Chilean authorities deny their request to leave, the pilot decides to fly the plane anyway, risking everything to get them out. The photographs smuggled from the colony later play a crucial role in exposing the crimes committed there, though the full extent of the atrocities only became widely known years later. The ending underscores how Lena and Daniel’s bravery and resourcefulness helped reveal the truth, though justice and awareness took time to catch up with the hidden horrors of Colonia Dignidad.
