Lieutenant Raymond "Ray" Dower commands a United States Coast Guard cutter with quiet authority, steering by a steady, practiced hand and a crew that trusts him implicitly. His best friend in the service, Randolph Scott as Speed Bradshaw, is a gifted but reckless pilot whose daring carries him—and those around him—to the edge of danger, yet time and again saves lives in the process.

During a daring rescue at sea, they pull aboard Walter Connolly as Tobias Bliss, the captain of a tramp steamer, from a perilous fate. At the base hospital, the rescued captain’s granddaughter, Nancy Bliss Frances Dee, becomes the center of a complicated triangle. Both Ray and Speed fall for her, but Speed makes the first move, and Ray serves faithfully as best man at the wedding.

The marriage falters as Nancy grows weary of long nights spent waiting, and she ultimately leaves Speed. In a bid to win her back, Speed pushes himself and his flight to the limit, performing a dizzying stunt over her house that ends in a crash. Grounded and facing a court-martial, Speed learns that his best friend is missing on a dangerous Arctic rescue mission. Nancy, determined to repair the rift, persuades Speed and his co-pilot, O'Hara, to attempt the rescue.

The mission takes a perilous turn with a harrowing crash-landing in the Arctic. An injured Ray is located, and Speed, showing quick thinking, manages a dangerous takeoff to fly his friend home. The reunion brings relief and a renewed sense of hope as Nancy waits, ready to welcome Speed back into the warmth of home.
