Lida Baburova, Olga Zabotkina, a tour guide at an architectural museum, unexpectedly receives a two-room apartment in the newly developed Zarechye district, a neighborhood residents affectionately call Our Cheryomushki. Brimming with anticipation to inspect their new home, Lida and her father step inside only to face a shocking reality: their apartment has effectively vanished. The building manager, Barabashkin Evgeni Leonov, has driven a corrupt merger by falsifying documents to combine their unit with a neighboring apartment owned by Drebednyov Vasili Merkuryev, the head of the construction trust. This blatant act of corruption roars through the community, leaving the Baburovs homeless and sparking outrage among the residents.

Meanwhile, Boris Vladimir Vasilyev, who is smitten with Lida, seizes the moment to help—and to win her favor. He suggests to Drebednyov that his oversized apartment could be split into two if his young wife, Vava Marina Polbentseva, were to leave him in a divorce. Yet Lida, unwilling to accept a solution built on manipulation, politely refuses Boris’s offer and insists that justice must be found through proper channels rather than clever schemes.

Determined to stand up for what’s right, the residents rally together and report the corruption to the construction authorities. Their collective action echoes through the neighborhood, turning the tide against the dishonest leadership. As a result, the Baburovs’ rightful apartment is restored, Barabashkin is demoted to janitor, and Drebednev—now single—assumes Barabashkin’s former position. The outcome is not just a restoration of property but a reaffirmation of community solidarity and accountability.
