Spring arrives on the Zuckerman Farm, setting the stage for a new era after Charlotte's death. Wilbur has become a companion and mentor to Nellie, Aranea, and Joy as they reach adolescence.

Wilbur meets Cardigan, a newborn lamb with black wool who is shunned by the others. He takes Cardigan under his wing, introducing him to the farm, animal life, and the risks they face.

Wilbur, Nellie, Aranea, Joy, and Templeton set out to visit Cardigan and check on his safety. Templeton negotiates a deal that forces Wilbur to babysit his rat children for extra guidance.

On the road, Wilbur is hungry and nibbles blackberries, turning his fur a purple hue. The mishap foreshadows the awkward trouble they'll face while traveling.

With Cardigan safe and the fox threat resolved, Aranea and Joy decide to stay with Cardigan. Wilbur returns to his role babysitting Templeton's children, ending the immediate crisis and continuing life on the farm.
