A lawyer visits Matti Ojanperä, a homeless man living under a bridge in Helsinki’s harbour, to tell him he is set to inherit one million Finnish markka from an American aunt. The aunt’s will demands that he prove he can “live properly,” meaning he must have a respectable occupation and be able to support a family. If he fails, the money will go to a charitable foundation, whose chairman is the very lawyer who delivered the news.
