Margot, a college sophomore, works at a local movie theater. This job sets the stage for her interactions and experiences that unfold throughout the story.

Margot starts dating Robert, a frequent visitor of the movie theater. As they grow closer, Margot begins to have unsettling thoughts about Robert potentially being violent.

After their first official date, Robert discovers that Margot is only 20 years old. They are denied entry to a bar due to her age, leading them to return to his house for an intimate encounter.

During their encounter, Margot converses with a second version of herself, who urges her to voice her discomfort. Nevertheless, Margot engages with Robert and fakes an orgasm, fearing his reaction.

Margot's roommate, Taylor, intervenes by stealing Margot's phone and texting Robert, ending communication. Although Robert responds well initially, he later bombards Margot with angry messages.

Margot realizes that Robert is following her, which causes her alarm. She decides to report this to the police, but they inform her that he is not technically breaking any laws.

Feeling unsafe, Margot contemplates purchasing a taser after being advised at a store to buy a gun. Eventually, she opts for tracking devices to monitor Robert's behavior.

While trying to place a tracking device in Robert's car, Margot is startled by a dog that reveals Robert's prior knowledge of her whereabouts. In a chaotic moment, she accidentally sprays herself with pepper spray.

Margot regains consciousness in Robert’s house, where he admits to stalking her. Their confrontation escalates as they argue about his intentions and her safety.

During a physical struggle, Margot inadvertently opens a door leading to the basement—revealing a cat and confirming Robert's earlier claims. The fight intensifies as they tumble down the stairs.

As they fall down the basement stairs, Margot and Robert unintentionally knock over a space heater, igniting a fire. They both flee into the house's cistern to escape the flames.

After surviving the fire, Margot wakes up in the hospital, facing both physical and emotional recovery. She learns that Robert has left town without any means for her to reach him.

Once she recovers, Margot returns to her job at the movie theater. Despite the trauma she endured, a new man expresses interest in her, hinting at a new chapter in her life.
