Cass Timberlane

Cass Timberlane is a middle-aged, highly respected judge in a small Minnesota town. One day, he handles a string of divorce cases and, through the hearings, takes a close look at Virginia “Ginny” Marshland, a much younger woman who stands out during the proceedings. After adjournment, he returns Ginny’s notebook she left behind in the courtroom, and he secretly keeps a sketch she drew of him in his private library. Back at home, Cass fills the quiet with a flute melody, but a mischievous kitten slips inside and triggers his allergies. He steps out for a moment and crosses the railroad tracks, where he unexpectedly encounters Ginny again, this time outside the courtroom, playing baseball with easy, effortless grace. He quietly offers to serve as umpire, and what begins as a small gesture of goodwill evolves into a shared meal at a nearby restaurant that same evening.

The emotional tide then shifts again when Ginny confides in Cass that the pressure and melancholy of their situation are weighing heavily on her. She suggests they consider moving elsewhere to reclaim a sense of freedom. They head to New York City, where Cass reconnects with a college friend to discuss a possible law partnership. Yet the professional offer dissolves as Ginny continues to socialize with Bradd, raising questions in Cass’s mind about loyalty and fidelity. Cass ultimately withdraws the job offer and resolves to return home, but Ginny’s mood darkens, and she decides to stay in New York. Ginny and Bradd share an evening of dining together, but when it becomes clear that Bradd will not marry her, she walks away. The situation takes a dangerous turn when Bradd drives Ginny in a car and she makes a desperate move, leaping from the moving vehicle and sustaining internal injuries.

Cass immediately flies back from Minnesota upon learning of Ginny’s injuries and stays at her bedside in a New York apartment until she is stable enough to return home. Once she recovers, they bring her back to Minnesota, where the couple resumes life together under the shadow of her illness and the lingering strain of their experiences. Through the long, painful days, Cass comes to recognize the depth of Ginny’s longing for personal freedom, and he proposes a divorce should she wish to pursue it in New York. Yet, despite the promise to remain a faithful husband, Ginny ultimately chooses to stay, choosing a complicated balance of love, independence, and a practical future that neither fully denies nor fully grants.
