Carol’s Journey

Carol and her mother Aurora arrive in their family's hometown in Spain during the Civil War. It is Carol's first visit to the country, having grown up in New York, and she observes the local culture and environment. The visit marks a significant cultural contrast for Carol, as she witnesses the effects of the war firsthand.

Aurora confides in her former teacher and friend Maruja that she is seriously ill and has returned home to die. This revelation highlights her fragile health and adds emotional weight to her visit. Aurora’s illness also affects her relationships and the family’s future plans.

Aurora passes away, leaving Carol devastated and grief-stricken. Before her death, Aurora asks her to keep her illness and death a secret from Robert, Carol's father, to prevent him from worrying. Carol struggles to cope with her loss and her new reality.

Carol persuades Maruja to write letters to her father Robert in her mother’s name, maintaining the facade that Aurora is still alive. These letters serve as a connection between Carol and her father, helping her cope with her mother's death. Carol begins navigating life with her Aunt Dolores and cousin Blanca.

Carol moves to live with her aunt Dolores and cousin Blanca, starting her new life away from her mother. During this period, she befriends three local boys, including Tomiche, with whom she develops a romantic interest. Her environment becomes more complex amid ongoing war tensions.

Following Madrid's fall and the defeat of the Republican faction, the political landscape shifts drastically. Don Amalio, the family’s pro-Republican member, is forced to burn his political books as the Francoist regime consolidates power. This marks a turning point in the family's dynamics.

Robert, Carol's father, manages to sneak back home from the frontlines. Carol is overjoyed to see him again, providing a moment of relief amidst the chaos of war. His return signifies a rare glimpse of normality during turbulent times.

During the authorities' search for Don Amalio, Tomiche, whom Carol wanted her father to meet, is accidentally shot and killed. His death underscores the tragic consequences of the war and the dangerous environment in which they live. This event profoundly impacts Carol emotionally.

With the defeat of the Republicans, the family faces the aftermath of war. Robert is captured and taken prisoner. Don Amalio remains hopeful that Robert will serve only a few months in jail due to his U.S. citizenship. The family begins adjusting to the new political reality.

After the war, Carol leaves Spain and returns to New York to live with her paternal grandparents. The story concludes with her reflecting on her experiences and saying farewell to her friends, including the ghosts of Tomiche and her childhood.

As Carol departs, she imagines Tomiche and her friends riding their bikes to say goodbye to her, symbolizing her remaining connection to her childhood and the friends she made in Spain. This moment highlights her emotional journey and farewell to her past.
